The most exciting throwback for gaming fans in 2025 is undoubtedly The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remaster, which has introduced stunning graphics to the world of Cyrodiil. Oblivion’s legendary storyline remains memorable, with its main quest offering some of the most engaging missions in RPG history.
This sentiment rings especially true for the ‘Dagon Shrine’ quest. In this mission, you’ll infiltrate or eliminate the Mythic Dawn cultists within an underground temple to recover the vital Amulet of Kings. Here’s a guide on how to locate, initiate, and finish the Dagon Shrine quest in Oblivion Remastered.
Starting Dagon Shrine and Your Approach
Following the completion of the previous main quest ‘Weynon Priory’, you’ll jump straight into ‘Dagon Shrine’. The prior quest concludes as you learn the location of Dagon Shrine, located within the Lake Arrius Caverns on the eastern side of the map. The closest large town is Cheydinhal, making it wise to fast travel there before venturing north toward the caverns.
You have two primary tactics for tackling the ‘Dagon Shrine’ quest, both of which involve significant combat. If you’re low on supplies, it’s best to stock up in Cheydinhal prior to entering the caves. The route from Cheydinhal to Lake Arrius Caverns is fairly straightforward, and you likely won’t face any major foes along the way.
As you enter the caves through the double wooden doors, you’ll be confronted by a Mythic Dawn Doorkeeper as you delve deeper towards the Dagon Shrine entrance.
The Direct Approach
Upon interaction with the Mythic Dawn Doorkeeper, you’ll be invited to join the cult. If you choose the aggressive method, you should decline twice and initiate combat with Harrow, the cult member. Eliminate the Doorkeeper and push further into the caverns.
In the subsequent room, you’ll encounter a few additional Mythic Dawn members, but take time to explore, gathering any valuable loot you can find. No rush; this won’t disrupt the ceremony taking place in the temple. Mankar Camoran will be addressing his followers at the altar in the main temple room. As you draw closer, the cult members will attack, and Mankar Camoran will teleport away to the Realm of Paradise.
Regardless of your speed, you cannot prevent Mankar Camoran from teleporting. Avoid rushing in an attempt to intercept him; he won’t sustain any damage, regardless of your attack.
Defeat the remaining Mythic Dawn members and approach the altar. You’ll find a defenseless Algorian Priest named Jeelius tied up at the back, whom you can choose to rescue.
It’s beneficial to free him, as you will meet him again later, granting you a permanent stat boost upon speaking with him. Proceed to the front of the altar, where you’ll discover the Mysterium Xarxes book, essential for progressing in your quest.
You cannot exit via your original entrance; those doors lock automatically when combat begins. Instead, you’ll need to navigate to the Living Quarters where additional Mythic Dawn members await. Once again, take your time and loot thoroughly.
The exit from the caves is generally straightforward, although you’ll need to eliminate a specific Mythic Dawn member to acquire a key and turn a handle to unlock the gate.
After escaping the caves, fast travel to the Cloud Ruler Temple. Upon arrival, Jauffre will approach you. Inform him of your findings, and he’ll insist you speak with Martin immediately. Martin is located inside the main building right in front of you; hand him the Mysterium Xarxes. He’ll explain that the book is not safe for you to possess, as he needs to examine it to recover the Amulet of Kings.
At this point, Dagon Shrine is complete, and you will immediately embark on the next main quest, ‘Spies’.
The Stealth Approach
The alternative method for retrieving the Amulet of Kings is to masquerade as a potential Mythic Dawn member. In this approach, you agree to surrender your belongings to Harrow and instead attend the mass, listening to Mankar Camoran’s preaching. After he teleports to the Realm of Paradise, you must proceed to the altar for your initiation into the Mythic Dawn.
During the ritual, you are required to use a ceremonial dagger to kill Jeelius. If you refuse, the cultists will attack. If you do comply and kill Jeelius, you’ll subsequently be instructed to retrieve the Mysterium Xarxes, leading to another attack from the cult members. There’s no way to take the book without triggering a battle; combat will ensue regardless of your stealth.
If your goal is to save Jeelius, it’s best to rescue him post-battle in the temple since he will sprint away past remaining Mythic Dawn members, likely leading to his demise.
The stealth approach will parallel the loud method outlined previously. However, a significant challenge is that you won’t have any of your weapons, armor, potions, or items. To regain your possessions, you must defeat Harrow and loot his body, all while contending with several Mythic Dawn members attacking you.
Which Approach Is Superior?
From a practical standpoint, the stealth option is not the most advantageous during ‘Dagon Shrine’. You cannot obtain the Amulet of Kings since you cannot loot it from Mankar Camoran, and he will escape with it regardless of your actions. The primary distinction between the stealth and direct approach is that with the loud method, you retain all your gear throughout, negating the need to defeat Harrow for retrieval.
However, if your character is better suited for stealth, you may choose that path, but it’s necessary to engage and defeat the Mythic Dawn members in the caves. You’ll need to tackle some foes with a dagger while unarmored.
