Borderlands 4 tones down the toilet humor, but Gearbox couldn’t resist adding one more sewage-themed quest. In Potty Mouth, your Vault Hunter must help a sassy AI shed her porcelain body. And, how do you do that? Yep, you guessed it — by shooting things.
Once the quest is finished, you’ll face a rare moral choice in Borderlands 4. It makes sense that a quest involving a toilet ends with you taking the “Thinker’s pose.” This guide will walk you through the steps to complete the quest and explain what happens with each decision.
Starting Borderlands 4’s Potty Mouth Quest
To begin, head to Embracer’s Bluff, a rough-and-tumble village in the northern part of the Lopside region, east of Makeshift Chalet. There, you’ll find GenIVIV, a talking toilet, inside one of the town’s few buildings.
Once you talk to her, she’ll ask you to kill everyone in town. This will seem odd at first, so follow the waypoint to the tallest building—Mayor Payne’s house—where he’s soaking in a bathtub on the second floor. He’ll explain GenIVIV’s backstory and ask you to find her a new home.
Next, go back to GenIVIV and tell her she needs to move. Since carrying her all that way isn’t practical, it’s time to find a solution.
Activate The Clap Signal
Climb on top of Mayor Payne’s house and turn on the “Clap Signal.” Claptrap will arrive, reuniting with GenIVIV, but he’ll get stuck on her seat right away.
To free him, look to the right for a glowing green handle and press to flush. If Claptrap remains stuck, turn the wheel on the left side of the toilet. When that doesn’t work, take matters into your own hands and smash him with a melee attack.
Help Claptrap and GenIVIV
After smashing Claptrap, he’ll be stuck again. Pick him up and return to the toilet shack, where Claptrap will install GenIVIV into a robot called Broomba. When GenIVIV asks you to slap her, melee the Broomba to transfer her consciousness. Pick up the robot, and you’ll be ready to move on.
At the Order Base
Head north toward the closest Order headquarters. It’s located east of the Rustical Hurl silo and south of Deckled Sprawl. If you try to enter through the main gate, you’ll find it locked and guarded. Instead, follow the dirt path to the east to find a back door. Claptrap will be waiting there.
Inside, prepare for a tough fight. Clear out the flying enemies first, using cover to handle grounded foes. Once the area is clear, Claptrap will follow you further.
Place GenIVIV at the glowing green console near the inside entrance, then proceed inside. Expect some robots to ambush you at the door—defeat them.
Dealing with the Experimental Constructor
Hack the door to access a room where an experimental constructor drone is waiting. Take the drone, go outside, and place it in the marked spot so GenIVIV can transfer into it. This will trigger another enemy wave, so prepare to fight. Focus on any flying enemies to make things easier.
Killing Too Many Rippers
After the wave, an Order Hulkhead will drop in, which GenIVIV wants to control. Defeat it, then she will move north along the road. Follow the waypoint, where she’ll digistruct a Hulkhead body and attack a nearby Ripper camp. Join her and help kill some Rippers. She’ll handle most of the fighting, so just finish off the ones she misses.
As you progress, Claptrap will become increasingly nervous about all the killing. This leads to him breaking up with GenIVIV, who then gets angry and attacks you both. This isn’t much of a boss fight — she’s no stronger than a regular Hulkhead.
Defeating GenIVIV
After fighting her, defeat her and collect her core. She’ll be destroyed, but her core is now yours.
Deciding GenIVIV’s Fate
Go to Moxxi’s Bottoms Up for the final decision. You have two options:
- Install GenIVIV into the venue’s sound system.
- Erase her completely.
Pick whatever feels right. Either way, GenIVIV will be upset, and Claptrap remains indifferent. This choice doesn’t affect anything beyond this scene.
Once you’ve made your choice, return outside and talk to Claptrap to finish the quest. You started by helping a toilet, but in the end, you may have caused its destruction.
