The Marathon server test is now available, allowing players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X to download a limited version of the game and try it out. As the name suggests, the primary purpose of this test is to gather as many players as possible to run through missions on Tau Ceti IV. This helps stress the game’s servers and prepare for a smooth launch. This is the first and only chance for the public to play Marathon before its official release. If you want to join in, here’s what you need to know: the start and end times in different regions, and what rewards you can earn by participating.
The server test is ongoing now and will end on March 2 at 6 PM UTC. Here are the corresponding times for various regions:
– Pacific Time: March 2 at 10 AM
– Eastern Time: March 2 at 1 PM
– UK: March 2 at 6 PM
– Central Europe: March 2 at 7 PM
– Australia: March 3 at 5 AM
– New Zealand: March 3 at 7 AM
Unlike previous early tests, this Marathon beta doesn’t require sign-ups or pre-orders and is free. Anyone on PS5, Xbox Series X, or Steam can download the test from the respective stores—just make sure you have a stable internet connection since it’s an online multiplayer experience. Also, a subscription like PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass is needed for online access on those consoles.
There’s no preloading option for this beta, so you’ll need to download it as soon as it releases at 6 PM UTC on February 26. The full game, however, will have preloading available before its launch date, which will be announced by Marathon’s community team on Discord. Expect preloading to start after the server test ends.
Participation during the test can earn you various rewards that will carry over into the full game, which will launch soon after. Keep in mind that progress during the test won’t transfer to the final release, but the rewards will be waiting for you. These include an emblem and background for completing the intro mission, special item caches, weapons, and upgrades for reaching certain levels, and more.
Even if you can’t play during the beta, you might still earn some rewards by watching streams on Twitch, which will feature Marathon drops.
During this server test, players can enjoy more content than in the April 2025 closed alpha. You’ll get to experience core gameplay, teaming up with other players to gather loot, fight enemies, and escape. The available maps are Perimeter and Dire Marsh, with plans for more in future updates. You’ll access six different Marathon Runner Shells and five factions to complete contracts for, with additional content planned for the full release. The beta supports both cross-play and cross-save, so players can switch platforms easily, much like Destiny 2. Proximity chat will also be available for real-time voice communication.
