New Resident Evil Movie Will Take Creative Liberties
The director of the new Resident Evil movie, Zach Cregger, has stated he’s not strictly following the game’s storylines. He understands that fans will criticize him online, regardless of how closely he sticks to the original lore.
While most Resident Evil fans are excited about the upcoming ninth main game, Resident Evil Requiem, there’s another major project in the works: a new movie. This film is generating more buzz than previous adaptations that didn’t quite meet expectations.
Currently titled “Resident Evil,” the film is directed by Zach Cregger, who is an avid fan of the video games. However, Cregger has made it clear that he won’t try too hard to match the details of the games in his reboot.
Movie Not Bound by Game’s Rules
Zach Cregger Aims to Please, But Not Too Much
According to GamesRadar+, Cregger recently spoke with SFX magazine about the film. He expressed that he’s a “gigantic” fan of the games but isn’t trying to directly adapt them for the screen.
Cregger explained that he doesn’t plan to be “completely obedient” to the game’s story. He wants to create something fresh while giving fans a familiar experience. He knows that critics will have strong opinions, making it less significant to worry about perfect adherence to the canon.
“I’m trying to tell a story that feels true to the gaming experience. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I know people will criticize no matter what,” said Zach Cregger.
Even if that might raise concerns for dedicated fans, Cregger aims to create a film that captures the essence of playing the games. Given the complicated lore of Resident Evil, taking this approach seems to be a sensible choice for the movie’s direction.
