Opinion: Will Xbox Helix Compel Sony to Announce PS6?

In a recent poll I shared about the PS6 last month, nearly 60% of respondents indicated they wouldn’t want it until at least 2029. Remarkably, 12% suggested Sony should hold off until 2031 or later—meaning five or more years from now.

After the announcement of Project Helix, confirmed by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma on social media overnight, I’d love to run a similar poll. Only 11% of our audience expressed a desire for the PS6 by 2027; I suspect many would disagree and want Sony to release it as soon as possible.

This creates a curious contradiction. Xbox has been struggling for years, with hardware sales declining annually—probably to the point where sales are practically nonexistent. Meanwhile, the PS5 is thriving, surpassing Nintendo’s Switch 2 in the US during January. Titles like Resident Evil Requiem are selling extremely well, demonstrating strong support for Sony’s current console.

So why is there so much enthusiasm for new hardware from Microsoft, yet less from Sony? Why is the announcement of Project Helix generally received positively, while rumors of a potential PS6 delay circulate wildly, and fans seem to celebrate the prospect of waiting longer?

One theory is that Microsoft might be aiming for a reset once again. This isn’t the first time; the Xbox Series X|S was highly anticipated, representing a fresh start after the struggles of the Xbox One era. Everyone loves a comeback story—even if it involves a trillion-dollar tech giant.

The PS5 Pro appears to be enjoying a bit of a renaissance right now. Sony is on the verge of rolling out PSSR 2, which is expected to significantly boost software performance. Resident Evil Requiem, running on this upgraded system, outshines other consoles, making the idea of new hardware less pressing.

Microsoft seems poised to reveal more about Project Helix as it attempts to regain relevance under its new leadership. While it claims to focus on the console again, it’s still unclear what that really entails, especially with big upcoming titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable scheduled for PlayStation 5.

I wonder how all this will affect Sony’s communication regarding the PS5. There’s speculation about whether Sony might delay the PS6, but some reports suggest it could arrive in 2027. Right now, there’s little motivation for Sony to say much; major titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and GTA 6 will ensure a strong 2026. Additionally, a new God of War and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet are reportedly lined up for the following year.

These four titles alone should keep PS5 momentum going into the next year and beyond. However, if Microsoft pushes aggressively with its next-gen efforts, it might force Sony to speak out more openly about its plans. Despite the competition, Sony is likely to stay cautious, wary of its sly rival in Redmond.

I expect the PS6 to launch late next year, unless RAM shortages make it impossible to produce at a reasonable price. Most upcoming console generations may feel more like smartphone upgrades, sharing much of their software and hardware with previous models.

Whether that strategy will excite consumers remains uncertain. If Sony can’t generate interest in the PS6, then Project Helix might not significantly impact the market. Microsoft’s main challenge will be establishing a profitable business model that meets its high profit targets.

They’ll talk up their plans, as they often do, but offering hardware that bypasses their own store and services—favoring third-party options like Valve—raises doubts about the viability of losing money on hardware. It’s possible Xbox could end up costing twice or three times what the PS6 does, which might not be a real threat.

Even with new leadership under Asha Sharma, Microsoft seems intent on talking extensively about future plans. I’m eager to see whether Sony takes notice and encourages more openness about its next-gen console.

We’ll likely find out more in the upcoming months.

What do you think about Xbox Helix’s surprise announcement? Will it influence Sony’s plans for the PS6? Do you believe it will affect how PlayStation approaches its next hardware? Share your thoughts below.
