The realm of Dragon Age: Origins is home to a diverse cast of characters, including Alistair, a Grey Warden with royal aspirations. Among the more enigmatic figures in the story is Morrigan, known as the Witch of the Wilds, who plays a pivotal role in the game’s narrative.
Morrigan becomes part of your party after a tense escape from the Battle of Ostagar. Similar to other well-developed companions, players have the option to pursue a romantic relationship with her. However, romancing Morrigan is more intricate than in later titles like Inquisition. This guide aims to simplify the process of winning her heart.
Only male Wardens can enter a romance with Morrigan. Female Wardens will need to consider their options elsewhere.

If your connection with Morrigan dwindled due to a love triangle, our updated tips will help keep the flame alive while juggling relationships with multiple companions. With Morrigan’s ongoing importance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about her.
Keep Her Approval High
In Dragon Age: Origins, each companion has an approval rating that fluctuates based on the player’s actions and dialogue choices. Morrigan is no exception.
As you boost her approval, Morrigan’s interest in you will grow, shifting from her initial sarcastic demeanor to something much warmer.
Maximizing Morrigan’s approval is essential for successfully romancing her.
Should her approval drop too low, she might leave the party, which would effectively end any chance of romance.
While she returns towards the end of the game to perform a ritual that can prevent a Grey Warden sacrifice, it’s too late for a meaningful romance with Morrigan then.
There are two main strategies for gaining and keeping a high approval rating with Morrigan.
Present Morrigan with Favorable Gifts
A surefire way to boost her approval is by offering her gifts.
Gifts are special items labeled as “gifts,” highlighted in pink beneath the item’s name.
Be sure to read the descriptions of items to ensure they are things she appreciates, as her approval rating will vary depending on how much she likes each gift.
Morrigan tends to favor shiny objects like jewelry, so aim for gifts of that nature.
Additionally, there’s a specific item you need to retrieve for her to kick off her quest (more on that shortly).
Align Your Choices with Morrigan’s Values
Morrigan generally subscribes to a “survival of the fittest” philosophy and looks down upon what she sees as weakness.
While this might initially paint her as a villain, her character can evolve.
She appreciates when players are open-minded regarding her status as an apostate mage (mages living outside the Chantry’s law) and her upbringing in the Kocari Wilds.
You can engage her in conversation whenever she’s in your party or at the camp, accessible from the map screen.
Finish Morrigan’s Personal Quest
To romance Morrigan, you must give her a specific gift—the black grimoire. If her approval rating is sufficient, she will ask you to retrieve it.
You can find this grimoire in First Enchanter Irving’s office, located in the senior mage quarter on the second floor of the Circle Tower.
At some point, you’ll need to visit this location for the main quest, so make sure to grab it to accomplish two tasks at once.
Whether she requests it or you retrieve it independently, you will trigger the Flemeth’s Real Grimoire quest.
After obtaining it, Morrigan will need time to study the grimoire, so feel free to complete other quests during that period.
Return to camp later, and she will reveal that the book details how Flemeth survives by transferring her soul into the body of one of her daughters.
Not wanting to face a similar fate, Morrigan asks you to go to Flemeth’s hut, dispatch her, and take Flemeth’s Grimoire.
Refusing her will result in her departure from your party and will ruin your chances of romancing Morrigan.
How To Handle Flemeth
After speaking with Morrigan, head to Flemeth’s hut without her to have a conversation with Flemeth.
Here, you can choose to let her escape after she hands over her grimoire, deceiving Morrigan, or choose to confront her and fight.
Should you opt for battle, Flemeth will transform into a dragon, leading to a challenging boss fight.
Here are three main strategies for defeating Flemeth:
- Use a Fire-Resistant Tank to attract her attention (any warrior character works well for this).
- Let your spellcasters and archers strike at her from a distance.
- Trap her using spells like Cone of Cold to immobilize her.
-
Keep your tank near Flemeth’s hind legs.
- By positioning correctly, Flemeth will struggle to inflict damage while you chip away at her health.
Once you’ve defeated her, loot Flemeth’s body for a key and use it to unlock the chest within her hut, where you’ll find Flemeth’s grimoire.
Return to camp and present Morrigan the grimoire as a gift to complete her quest and earn a significant approval boost.
Steer Clear of Love Triangles
No one appreciates betrayal, including the characters of Dragon Age: Origins.
The game allows for relationships with multiple characters, but you’ll eventually need to choose one over the others.
If you choose to date another character while also pursuing Morrigan, be sure to select her as your final partner (often Leliana or Zevran for male Wardens).
Pursuing another romance will jeopardize your connection with Morrigan, unless you’re careful to plan around each character’s jealousy and personal quests.
Follow these steps for successfully juggling multiple romances in Dragon Age: Origins:
- Create a backup save prior to starting, just in case something goes awry.
- Begin relationships with both Morrigan and another character—Leliana, for instance—before triggering their personal quests. Do not give Morrigan the golden mirror at this point.
- Talk to Morrigan and commit to her exclusively. Then, speak with Leliana to do the same.
- End your relationship with Leliana through dialogue.
- Complete Leliana’s quest, then approach her again in your camp. You should be able to rekindle your relationship.
- Now, you can present Morrigan with the golden mirror and compliment her beauty.
- You’ll now be romancing Morrigan while maintaining ties with Leliana, allowing you to interact with both characters freely.
The Significant Moment
As you near the max approval rating with Morrigan, she will express her feelings for you, leading to a romantic scene where you both share a night together.
Following this scene, you will officially be in a relationship with the Witch of the Wilds.
