Exploring the vast world of Aloft can be quite an adventure, especially with its extensive procedurally generated map. To navigate effectively, you’ll want a few tools to help you decide where to head next.
After you discover and study the knowledge stone that provides the recipe for Stormchaser—an invaluable navigation device in Aloft—you’ll be able to pay a small fee to locate rare landmarks scattered across the expansive map, from distressed ecosystems to knowledge stones.
Although Aloft is an enormous open-world sandbox game, it’s still in early access. We’ll keep our guides updated as the game evolves!
How to Use Stormchaser
The skies in Aloft are expansive and full of potential for discovery. While exploring the map is exhilarating, if you’re in search of something specific, the Stormchaser is your go-to device. It’s located in the Navigation tab of the Crafting menu on your home island and can help guide you to significant islands.
If you find yourself short on a crafting recipe essential to completing your project or need an item to enhance your home base, the Stormchaser can direct you to nearby knowledge stones. Keep an eye out, as they can be somewhat obscured despite the glowing rock and red ribbon indicators.
For those of you aiming to improve damaged ecosystems instead of focusing on building, you can opt to search for corrupted islands and fight to eliminate corruption nodes to restore balance or seek out the nearest unhealthy ecosystem that needs your attention and care!
Unhealthy ecosystems will also be marked on your map. If you see an island highlighted in yellow, it indicates that the ecosystem there is unhealthy or that you haven’t visited it for a while. Utilize the Stormchaser option for unhealthy ecosystems early on when you’re still discovering the skies and haven’t been able to mark these locations yet.
After you obtain the Stormchaser recipe, you can build and position it on your home island for convenient use. The materials needed to construct the Stormchaser include 20 stones, 10 Windstone Crystals, and 5 pieces of charcoal.
Once the Stormchaser is operational, you can trade resources for directions by interacting with the device. The basic requirement includes one Purified Water, one Charcoal, and five Windstone Shards, along with an additional item, which is detailed in the table below.

While you have Stormchaser activated, it will emit smoke towards the target you’re trying to track. This allows you to sail in that direction while consulting your map, helping you pinpoint the nearest island related to your search.
