Hypnos is a familiar character returning from Hades in Hades 2. He spends his time sleeping in a corner of the Crossroads, hidden away. Melinoë believes he can be woken up, but to do so, you’ll need special items like Soot.
Hecate took Hypnos from the House of Hades during Chronos’ attack, along with the baby Melinoë and her family portrait. Even now, Hypnos remains deep in sleep, though sometimes he seems to respond faintly when Melinoë talks to him. She’s determined to find a way to wake him up. While it might take conquering time and night, the effort is worth it.
Updated as of November 2, 2025, by Alexis Campbell: The article now includes details from the official 1.3 update, including how to awaken Hypnos and gather the necessary materials like Soot.
How to Reach Hypnos: End to Deepest Slumber
After progressing through Tartarus and building a relationship with Hypnos, you’ll unlock the Incantation to craft Dream Vapors, which could help with Hypnos’s condition. If the Incantation isn’t available in the Cauldron, try giving Hypnos some Nectar and talking to him. He won’t reply or increase friendship, but it might inspire Melinoë to think of the Incantation.
The End to Deepest Slumber Incantation needs:
- 1 Moly, found in Erebus
- 2 Mandrake, seeds found in the Rift of Thessaly
- 3 Poppy, seeds found in Tartarus
To speed up collecting these, raising your Silver Spade level or bringing Gale (for Moly) and Hecuba (for Mandrake and Poppy) can help.
Gifting the first Dream Vapor won’t wake Hypnos. Instead, it triggers a flashback scene where Melinoë enters a cardboard cutout depiction of the House of Hades, interacting with Hypnos in his dream. He stays asleep in the dream and only mutters greetings like “Welcome to the House of Hades,” but doesn’t fully wake up or respond properly. After a short conversation, the dream ends, and Melinoë returns to the Crossroads. For now, that’s all you can do—continue challenging the night and building relationships until more Dream Vapors help you.
What Are Dream Vapors?
Completing the Incantation grants Melinoë one Dream Vapor, which she can gift to Hypnos. These vapors are mainly used to try to wake him. They can only be given to Hypnos and serve no other purpose. You will need to craft multiple Dream Vapors, each time needing different ingredients due to the layers of Hypnos’s dreams.
How to Get the Second Incantation: End to Dearest Slumber
To unlock the next incantation, you need to build a rapport with Lady Medea. She will mention Hypnos’s issue, and Melinoë can ask her for help. Medea provides a similar incantation, with the same ingredients but in different amounts: 1 Moly, 2 Poppy, and 3 Mandrake.
Use the Dream Vapors again to enter Hypnos’s dream, which now looks like a layered fever dream of a pillow fortress. You can only go this deep in his dreams, requiring one more layer to break to wake him.
How to Wake Hypnos: End to Dumbest Slumber
Return to Medea and ask her about infusing Dream Vapors with Death. She will give you the “End to Dumbest Slumber” incantation, increasing the difficulty and adding a new ingredient: Soot.
This new item, Soot, is unique. It only appears after the epilogue, meaning you won’t find it during regular gameplay. When you meet Hades again after the credits, he will give you some Soot. No matter the outcome of your run, return to the Crossroads to craft the final incantation.
By crafting the final Dream Vapors and using them on Hypnos, you’ll eventually reach the last dream layer. The key to waking him turns out to be simply saying “Wake Up.” Hypnos will then wake in a panic, thank Melinoë, and disappear from the Crossroads. Doing so will earn you:
- The “Soundest of Sleepers” trophy or achievement
- Two Nightmare items for the fulfilled prophecy
Hypnos doesn’t seem to return to the Crossroads afterward and won’t appear in subsequent Tartarus runs. It appears he resumes his duties, leaving the sleep adventure behind for now.
