Fishing is now a permanent part of the casual gameplay in Destiny: Rising. Players can use different types of bait obtained through core activities to catch exotic fish. These fish can be traded for upgrade materials, cosmetics, and other items. This provides a good way to collect character materials without needing to take on tough PvE or PvP missions.
Even if fishing isn’t usually your thing, the rewards make it worth trying in Destiny: Rising. In this guide, we’ll explain how fishing works and share tips on how to upgrade your fishing skills to make catching fish easier.
How to Fish
Fishing can be done at specific locations throughout the game world, including Haven, the main social area. When you approach a compatible body of water, an interaction prompt will appear on your screen. Tap or press the interact button to open your fishing menu.
From this menu, you can select items to influence the type of fish you catch:
- Rod: Controls how easy it is to catch fish.
- Bait: Affects the rarity of the fish you can catch.
- Meal: Boosts the quantity and quality of fish caught at that spot for 20 minutes.
Once your equipment is ready, cast your line by pressing the fire button. When the line icon changes, press it again to reel in your catch. For higher rarity fish (above green/uncommon), you’ll need to play a quick mini-game—tap the screen repeatedly to keep a blue circle over the fish icon until its stamina is drained. Be careful; if you fail, you’ll lose your bait.
Rods and Bait
Your success depends heavily on your fishing gear. A better fishing rod makes it quicker to reel in fish and can be upgraded as you increase your fishing rank, available from Pandora-7 in Haven.
Bait determines which fish you’ll encounter. Lower-quality bait catches common and uncommon fish, with occasional rares. Higher-tier bait results in more rare and legendary fish, and the best bait gives you a chance at mythic and exotic catches.
To improve your chances further, you can use meals starting at Fishing Level 6. These meals increase the number and quality of fish at the spot for 20 minutes and stack with bait effects. Combining high-quality bait and meals gives you the best odds of catching exotic fish.
Fishing Abilities
As you catch fish, you gain experience points towards your Fishing Rank. Reaching certain ranks grants Fishing Ability Points, which can be spent to unlock passive upgrades that improve your fishing success rate over time. These upgrades include:
- Shortening the time needed to catch a fish.
- Reducing the chance of bait being consumed if you fail.
- Increasing the weight of caught fish.
- Unlocking beginner, intermediate, and advanced fishing spots.
- Improving your chances of catching rare or mythic fish.
- Extending your rod’s struggle range.
- Sensing the fish’s next movement during struggle.
- Increasing the size of the reel zone during fights.
- Unlocking special abilities like the chance to receive extra fish or catch shiny or exotic varieties.
Exact upgrade options are detailed in the ability tree, with points required for each node.
