Vein is a dark, post-apocalyptic cooperative survival game set in a world overrun by zombies. Players need to scavenge for supplies, repair their gear, and either fight or dodge hostile enemies. Every choice can be critical—what you find or decide to do could be a matter of life or death.

While searching through the environment, you’ll come across buildings that aren’t accessible right away. To open locked doors or containers, you’ll need lockpicks. You can either find lockpicks in the game world or craft your own. Here’s what you should know.

### Where to Find Lockpicks

Getting lockpicks can be unpredictable. Sometimes they spawn instantly in cardboard boxes, but other times you might walk for hours through wreckage and still come up empty-handed. It can get frustrating.

Although lockpick locations seem mostly random, some spots are almost guaranteed to have them. Focus your searches on work zones like garages, fire stations, and offices, where lockpicks are often stored in toolboxes or desks.

Two places that usually have lockpicks are the Redford Fire Station and Saranac Town Hall. Look for unlocked doors at these locations, or if you’re stuck, consider breaking a window to get inside.

### How to Craft Lockpicks

Since lockpicks are hard to find and tend to break after use, crafting your own is a smart move. Although it takes some effort, once you get it down, you’ll have a steady supply.

Start by obtaining the Lockpicking Schematics, which you can find randomly around the world—mainly in toolboxes, workbenches, or desks, especially at places like the Redford Fire Station or Saranac Town Hall.

After you discover the schematic, you’ll need to reach level 25 in Crafting to read it. The leveling-up process involves building your base and scavenging materials to make various items, including doors, windows, and medical supplies. Once you’re at level 25, you can craft lockpicks using these materials: one pair of scissors, five springs, and a heavy pair of pliers.

You must craft lockpicks at an Advanced Workbench, not the standard one. It may seem like a long process, but it’s essential for gaining access to blocked-off areas. To gather the necessary materials, break down furniture and other items in abandoned houses, sheds, and garages using tools like hammers and scissors, which you should keep handy at all times.

### How to Use Lockpicks

Using lockpicks is straightforward if you’ve played games like Skyrim. It’s a mini-game of finding the right position for the pick and rotating it 90 degrees without breaking it or exhausting your attempts.

Select the “Pick Lock” option when interacting with a locked door. Use your mouse to rotate the lockpick, then press D to attempt turning the lock. If you feel resistance or see it wiggle or stop turning, stop immediately—these signs indicate the lock is jamming.

Try adjusting the lockpick to a different angle. If it turns further without jamming, you are making progress. The more it turns, the closer you are to opening it. If it jams right away, try a bigger adjustment. When the lock finally turns all the way with a satisfying click, the door is unlocked. Easier locks need less precise positioning, while tougher ones require more careful adjustments.

To improve your chances, selecting the Lockpicking skill during character setup grants a bonus, making it easier to open locks and survive the zombie threat.

### Important Tips

If you run out of lockpicks or exit the lockpicking screen without success, the lock resets, and the ‘sweet spot’ changes, making subsequent attempts harder. It’s best not to waste lockpicks on tough locks unless you have plenty stored.
