Gathering food in Hytale is essential, especially when exploring dangerous areas where your character can die and lose loot. The simplest way to make sure you always have enough food is by building a farm near your base. Growing crops allows you to stay nourished for days on your adventures. Here’s what you need to know about farming in Hytale.
Farming Overview
At the start, you might just pick berries or mushrooms from the ground outside your spawn point. But if you want a reliable supply of different foods, you should set up a proper farm as soon as you can.
To begin, craft a Farmer’s Workbench using a standard Workbench, either one you find or one you make yourself. This special workbench gives you access to tools, seeds, saplings, planters, and more. Use it to craft seeds, prepare land with tools, and process your crops into other useful items.
For planting, you’ll need a Hoe, crafted from stone, copper, or iron, which you use to till the soil for your crops. Alternatively, you can craft planters and put your seeds in them—planters unlock as you upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench to higher tiers, so keep improving it.
Water is needed for every seed—either by watering them with a watering can or relying on rain. Crops grow after a few days, and you can harvest them by interacting with the plants and choosing to chop or collect. Crops can be eaten raw, used in cooked meals at the Chef’s Stove, or converted into Essence of Life if needed while exploring.
You will unlock new seed types by upgrading the Farmer’s Workbench and recovering memories through the game’s storyline in early access. Crafting a Scythe, introduced in the first early access update, allows you to harvest multiple crops at once, streamlining the collection process.
Pairing crop farming with the limited animal taming available in early access will help you stay well-supplied on your journey.
Farmer’s Workbench Recipes
The Farmer’s Workbench has six categories: Farming, Seeds, Saplings, Essence of Life, Planters, and Decorations—all related to crops and plants. You need to craft this workbench before starting to farm.
Examples of recipes include:
- Crude Hoe: 2 Tree Trunks (any type), 1 Stone (any type)
- Watering Can (Empty): Crafted directly
- Wooden Bucket: 3 Wood (any), 1 Iron Ingot
- Capture Crate: 4 Wood, 50 Essence of Life
- Fishing Trap (Tier 2): 10 Wood, 50 Essence of Life, 20 Plant Fibers, 1 Iron Ingot
- Fertilizer Bag (Tier 3): 10 Poop, 10 Essence of Life, 5 Vegetables (any kind)
- Copper Hoe (Tier 4): 2 Tree Trunks, 1 Copper Ingot
- Chicken Coop (Tier 5): 20 Wood, 50 Essence of Life, 10 Plant Fibers
- Iron Hoe (Tier 8): 2 Tree Trunks, 1 Iron Ingot
The workbench is divided into categories focused on plant-related items, requiring specific ingredients to craft each.
Seeds and Crops
Unlock new seeds as you upgrade your workbench and recover memories by exploring the storyline. Some examples:
- Sunflower Seed Bag: Unlocks at Tier 1, crafted with 5 Essence of Life and 1 Sunflower
- Wheat, Lettuce, Carrot, Corn, Cauliflower, Turnip, Aubergine, Pumpkin, Tomato, Chili, Cotton, Rice, Onion, Potato: all unlocked through tiers 1-7, with recipes varying in ingredients.
By creating “Eternal” versions of these seeds through unlocking certain memories, you’ll reduce the need to craft new seeds repeatedly.
Planters and Decorations
Various planters are crafted with stones, soil, and essence, such as:
- Stone Planter: 3 Stones, 2 Soil, 10 Essence of Life
- Tavern Planter: 3 Trunks, 1 Iron, 2 Soil, 10 Essence of Life
- Bamboo Planter: 20 Plant Fibers, 2 Soil, 10 Essence, 1 Bamboo Log
Decorative items include Sticks, Rugs, Hive, Scarecrow, Bale of Hay, Grass types, Moss blocks, Ivy, Vines, and others. Many require a combination of plant fibers, different moss types, and essence of life.
Soil and Terrain Items
Mixing soils like Mud, Dry Mud, Poisoned Dirt, or creating pathways and different grass types and gravel varieties allows customization of your farm setup and aesthetic.
Having a well-structured farm setup with the right crop, soil, and decoration recipes will keep your food supply steady. Coupling farming with animal taming in early access provides a strong foundation for staying alive and thriving in Hytale’s open world.
