With the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, players control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores an alien world, battling hostile wildlife, aggressive robots, and some familiar enemies. Longtime fans of the series may recall Sylux, a rival bounty hunter who first appeared back in 2004. Now, players will face off against him again in a significant boss battle in the Volt Forge, right after defeating the Flight Drone MCU. Here’s what you need to know to beat Sylux and survive his attacks.
How To Defeat Sylux
Sylux is a very aggressive foe with quick, powerful attacks. His main moves include:
| Attack | Description |
|---|---|
| Homing Missiles | Sylux spawns six missiles, firing them in sets of three that track your position. |
| Energy Wave | He leaps into the air and then slams down, creating a large energy wave you can jump over. |
| Melee Dash | Sylux raises his arm and quickly dashes toward your last location, slashing in an arc. |
| Shooting | He fires his cannon at you from both the ground and the air. |
| Energy Tornado | When he’s down to 75% health, Sylux shields himself with an energy tornado, reflecting projectiles. He spins rapidly, trying to crash into you. |
| Energy Bombardment | Sylux moves to the center and fires energy bombs in rings, with each wave expanding outward. |
In the start of the fight, Sylux will mix and match these attacks—using homing missiles, energy waves, melee dashes, or shooting at you. To counter:
- Homing Missiles can be dodged by dashing to either side just before they hit or destroyed using your weapons.
- Energy Wave can be avoided by jumping over it.
- Melee Dashes are best sidestepped as Sylux rushes toward you.
Focusing on avoiding damage and firing your weapons steadily is key, especially as you chip away at his health. When you do enough damage (around 75%), Sylux enters a second phase with new tactics.
Second Phase: Psychic Bombs and Defensive Shield
Once Sylux’s health drops below 75%, he will activate a shield that reflects projectiles. To disable it:
- Scan his energy barrier, then transform into Morph Ball.
- Move to any spot along the outer wall, then wait for Sylux to charge at you.
- When he does, deploy three Psychic Bombs in a line and quickly move out of their way. If timed correctly, the bombs will detonate and hurt Sylux.
Tip: Sylux’s movements can be unpredictable, so timing the bombs involves some trial and error. Try to coax him into hitting the wall, which makes his movement more predictable and easier to anticipate.
Hitting Sylux After the Shield Breaks
After taking enough damage with Psychic Bombs, Sylux will stop spinning and fall to his knees. Quickly exit Morph Ball and fire rockets into him. He’ll then recover, ascending to the center of the map.
In the next phase, Sylux will either launch an Energy Wave or Energy Bombardment attack.
-
If he chooses Bombardment, this is your best chance to hurt him. His bombs at max range cannot reach you if you position yourself against the back wall. Keep firing rockets or missiles until he reaches about half health, then he’ll revert to Energy Tornado mode.
-
During the Energy Tornado, Sylux reflects projectiles with his shield and spins rapidly, attempting to hit you. Dodge his attacks until he slows down again.
-
Once out of tornado form, Sylux might add melee dash attacks to his arsenal, so stay alert and keep moving.
Continue damaging Sylux until his health depletes completely, which triggers a cutscene. As a reward, you’ll earn an Energy Tank and can proceed further in the Volt Forge.
