After getting hit by Snake multiple times early in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Ocelot makes another appearance when you reach the crevice. This time, you can’t just rely on Snake knocking him out in a cutscene. You have to fight him directly in the game’s first boss battle.
This fight is a straight-up gunfight that tests your shooting skills. There’s no complicated trick to guarantee victory, but knowing some key details can help you succeed against the young Major. Here’s what you need to know.
Ocelot’s Attacks
Since Ocelot is just a regular human, he doesn’t have any special powers like some other bosses. Instead, he simply shoots at you.
He doesn’t stand still and fire. Instead, he runs around his area, trying to get into good positions to shoot over or around your cover. He can also fire ricochet shots, where bullets bounce off rocks and trees before hitting you.
Visual aid: There’s an image of Ocelot spinning his revolver.
To defend yourself, use the environment—rocks and trees—as cover. You don’t need to press your body against them; just crouch down and move around, keeping the cover always between you and Ocelot.
The Ocelot Unit, watching the fight, usually doesn’t intervene since Ocelot wants to handle the fight alone. But if you do something they consider cheating—like using a rifle or grenades—they might step in, though this rarely causes major issues.
How to Defeat Ocelot
Like with other bosses, you can reduce Ocelot’s health or stamina to end the fight. Whichever you choose, it’s important to plan your shots carefully. You should avoid shooting him when he’s aiming directly at you, as you’re more likely to get hit.
When to Attack Ocelot
Visual aid: An image shows Snake in cover with a hornet’s nest above.
The best times to attack are:
-
While he’s reloading:
Watch his ammunition bar under his health meter. When all the bullets turn grey, he’ll go off to reload. You can shoot him while he’s running or reloading openly. The game shows a cutscene for reloading at first, but soon he’ll reload without it, giving you a clear window for attack. -
When he’s grabbing his hat:
Shooting Ocelot can knock his hat off. He will eventually pick it up. When he does, he leaves himself open to attack—so strike then. -
When he’s distracted by hornets:
Several hornet nests are nearby. Shooting them down when Ocelot is close will distract him. This creates an opportunity to shoot him, but his men may shoot back at you for doing this.
Tips for Success
- Shoot him during his reloads, especially when he’s reloading out in the open.
- Knock off his hat to leave him vulnerable.
- Use hornet nests as distractions to get free shots.
When either his health or stamina is fully depleted, the fight ends immediately. If you deplete his stamina, you’ll unlock the Animals camo.
