As you explore Lumiose City in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you’ll come across various obstacles that can block your path or hide special items. Breaking through these obstacles is essential for progressing and discovering new Pokémon, but figuring out how to do it isn’t always straightforward.
Overcoming obstacles like rocks, slime piles, brambles, and cobwebs will often require specific moves. Here’s a guide to help you get past each one:
Every Obstacle and How to Pass It
Rock Boulders
These are one of the first hurdles you’ll face. After a while, Mabel will give you the move Rock Smash to clear the rocks. However, Rock Smash isn’t the only move that works. Stronger moves such as Power-Up Punch and Rollout can also be used.

Sludge Piles
Purple sludge piles can be cleared by using Water-type or Psychic-type moves. These types are effective in removing the sludge to proceed further.

Cobwebs
While traversing the rooftops, you’ll sometimes see cobwebs blocking your way. Using a Fire-type move to burn the webs away will turn them into walkable bridges.
Note: Fire-type moves are effective here, and other moves may also work. Try experimenting with your Pokémon’s moves to see what clears the webs.
Brambles
Thorny brambles block some paths but can be cleared away with Fire-type moves. Burning the brambles will open new routes.

Ice Boulders
Later in the game, you’ll encounter Ice Boulders. These can be melted with Fire-type moves, allowing you to pass through icy areas.
Note: There are currently no images provided for ice boulders being melted.
A quick tip: The move types tested and used for clearing obstacles include Fighting, Water, Psychic, Fire, and possibly others. It’s worth trying different moves on each obstacle to find what works best for you.
