Slay the Spire 2 takes players back to the mysterious spire, now featuring three characters from the original game plus two new ones, each with their own unique gameplay styles and card decks.
Unlocking new characters in the sequel is easier than you might think, even though the process differs slightly from the first game. Below is a guide to unlock all five playable characters and a quick summary of how they play.
The Ironclad
The Ironclad is available from the start, unlocked automatically. He’s the first character you’ll use for your initial run through the spire. His playstyle remains similar to the first game, focusing on aggressive self-damaging cards that boost his power through sacrificing health and using his own cards. While he’s beginner-friendly, there’s a lot of depth for advanced players, especially with builds that leverage the Exhaust mechanic to discard cards for strategic advantage.
The Silent
To unlock the Silent, you need to play a run as the Ironclad first. After completing that run, she will be unlocked automatically. She’s the second returning character and plays like her original version, emphasizing poison for stacking damage over time, drawing and discarding to adapt your hand, and using shivs to quickly defeat foes. She’s a bit more complex than the Ironclad but offers exciting strategic possibilities when set up correctly.
The Regent
The Regent is the first new character in Slay the Spire 2. You unlock him after ending a run as the Silent, regardless of whether you win or lose. He introduces a new secondary energy resource called Stars, which you earn and spend via specific cards. The Regent also features the Forge mechanic, allowing you to build up a powerful attack card that retains its damage each turn, leading to potentially explosive finishes.
The Necrobinder
This character becomes available after you finish a run as the Regent. Her companion is Osty, a skeletal hand that takes damage in her place and resummons each turn. You can use cards to attack enemies or buff Osty’s health to improve his tankiness. She has access to the Doom mechanic, which can instantly kill enemies when their health drops below the amount of Doom inflicted on them.
The Defect
The Defect is the third classic character returning from the original game. You unlock him after ending a run as the Necrobinder, whether through victory or defeat. His gameplay focuses on channeling various types of Orbs, each providing different effects at the end of every turn. His mechanics are familiar to returning players and revolve around managing these orbs for strategic effect.
