History of Taoism in China
By the end of the Ming Dynasty and the start of the Qing Dynasty in China, Taoism was no longer a main religion. Many parts of Taoism blended into local Buddhist or Neo-Confucian practices. In Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Taoist characters are shown as distant or apart from the main story.
Key Taoist Character: Xuanyangzi
The most notable Taoist character is Xuanyangzi. He took care of Wuchang when he was sick and became obsessed with Feathering and Red Mercury. Your friend, He Youzai, warned you that Xuanyangzi seemed a bit strange. It turns out he was right. Xuanyangzi was banished from his Taoist temple, and you see why when you meet him in the Bo Capital.
Preparation for Xuanyangzi
Xuanyangzi is probably the final boss of the game, depending on which ending you get. Make sure to finish all other quests and battles before starting this fight. Explore all paths, optional bosses like Zhao Yun, and other challenges.
When facing him, remember that Xuanyangzi often uses Feathering and physical attacks. Bring resistances to these types of damage. He doesn’t usually cause status effects, so special spells like Demonbane Strike can help keep the pressure on. Defensive spells like Echo of the Bo Magus can also be useful.
Any weapon can be effective since Xuanyangzi has a large hitbox. But keep in mind, his attacks also cover a big area. Using stamina wisely for dodging is important because you will be moving around a lot.
You can summon Duryal for this battle if you completed the Old Storyteller’s quest in the Bo Capital.
Xuanyangzi’s Strengths And Weaknesses
As one of the final bosses, Xuanyangzi doesn’t have many weaknesses. His stagger meter fills easily, so keeping up pressure is key for easy damage. Most types of damage and effects have about the same chance to work.
For defenses, focus on increasing Feathering resistance. He’s quite resistant to Feathering damage himself, so it’s smart to use different types of Tempering or weapons without Feathering damage to gain an advantage.
Xuanyangzi’s Moveset
Xuanyangzi has two phases in the fight. The second phase is stronger and more aggressive. Here are all his possible moves.
Phase One
- Flying Slam: He jumps into the air and crashes down. Dodge quickly when he descends; he tracks his target well.
- Wing Swipes: Swipes his wings in front of him, dealing high damage and knocking back. He can do this two or three times in a row. Dodge to avoid damage and get closer for hits.
- Stomp: Stomps with one leg around him. Dodge into it, and watch for him stepping back afterward.
- Lighting Soar: Leaps into the air, soaring back and forth, striking with lightning. Watch him carefully to dodge the slam at the end of his soar.
- Double Wing Spin: Spins in place twice in rapid succession. Dodge when he charges or run away, as timing is tricky.
- Quick Sword Stab Beam: When close, his sword glows red and fires a blast. Dodge when he thrusts the sword outward, usually twice in a row.
- Wing Stab: Swipes and stabs with one wing, reaching far. Dodge with similar timing as his Wing Swipes.
- Claw Slashes: Follows you with claws, sometimes finishing with an uppercut slash. Dodge every two attacks to stay safe.
- Charged Sword Stab Beam: Like the quick stab, but he raises his sword first. Dodge and move closer.
Phase Two
- Tidal Waves: Summons waves across the arena at the transition to this phase. Dodge these but be careful — they still wash over your screen.
- Enhanced Sword Slash: Leaps and slashes down, then slams again. Dodge early when his sword glows orange.
- Sword Slash With Projectiles: Swings twice, then fires tracking fireballs. Dodge and keep your distance.
- Water Geyser: Summons geysers around him. These are easy to avoid, and you can attack while he’s busy.
- Feathered Outburst: Stands still as his wings unleash many tracking projectiles. Use this opportunity to hit him from behind.
The second phase is more relentless, but you can use the same battle strategies as in phase one.
How To Win Against Xuanyangzi
The Battle
Focus on his range. If he attacks, you’re probably close enough to get hit. Always dodge when he starts an attack, even if it looks like you’re safe. It’s better to be cautious.
He runs around a lot, which makes it easier to approach from behind. While you can’t stagger him with a charged heavy attack, you can deal more damage. His hitbox is big, so you can hit him and his trailing parts.
In phase two, his attacks cover larger areas and include tracking projectiles. During this phase, it’s smart to use defensive spells like Echo of the Bo Magus to help you escape smaller hits.
You can summon Duryal again in the second phase, but avoid doing so during the tidal waves—he cannot dodge those and will be killed instantly. Wait until the second phase to maximize his usefulness.
The Rewards
Defeating Xuanyangzi earns you several rewards: the Echo of Xuanyangzi spell, which unleashes his empowered sword attack, the Unknown Meat pendant that boosts damage but increases damage taken when not wearing armor, the One-Handed Sword Plumed Grace, and the Fa – Blood Magic rune.
The gates ahead lead to the final boss, unless you gave Xuanyangzi the Jade Chisel earlier. If you did, it leads to an ending you probably don’t want.
