If you want advice on which characters to choose and what guns to use, check out the guides for the best Highguard Wardens and what weapons to look for while looting.
1. Reinforce more than just the walls near you at the start of a round
It’s tempting to use all your reinforcements on the walls closest to you when a match begins, but it’s smarter to think ahead. Make sure you and your teammates fortify key entrances and cover vulnerable spots on all sides. Reinforce ceilings and floors that enemies could destroy to flank you. Opponents can breach your shield dome from various angles and might use a Domesplitter to make a second opening, so cover as many approaches as you can.
2. Spread out to loot and then regroup
After setting up defenses, start looting. Since Highguard’s maps are large, encounters during collection are rare, and there are plenty of good loot spots between your base and key landmarks. Spread out to gather supplies, then regroup quickly once the Shieldbreaker begins to form. Gathering as much loot as possible before regrouping lets you launch attacks or defend more effectively, especially if the enemy takes time to show up.
3. Wardens take fall damage, but mounts do not
Mounts are great for quickly moving around the big maps, and they can jump far — helping you cross large gaps or escape danger. Just remember, wardens will take damage if they fall, but your mounts won’t. When riding, don’t dismount early before a jump or you might get knocked out. Full-speed jumps can be used to leap far distances or reposition on the fly.
4. Mine Vesper early in every loot phase
Mining Vesper crystals is key. Building up a stock early lets you buy gear like saddles, helmets, or better weapons quickly. Continue mining between rounds if you have spare time — it boosts your resources so you can buy better gear during raids or defend your base. Over multiple rounds, you can even use your Vesper reserves to buy rare gear instantly instead of looting it.
5. Know how to mine Vesper perfectly
Mining Vesper is straightforward — hit the deposit when the moving and static rings align perfectly. If timed right, you’ll fully charge your axe, and the next hit on a large crystal will break it instantly, giving you maximum Vesper in one go. Switch between mining small crystals with perfect timing and breaking larger ones with a charged axe to quickly gather resources.
6. Don’t buy lots of armor at once
You only lose armor when you die, and armor can shine in multiple rounds since it can break and regenerate while alive. To avoid wasting Vesper, buy armor only when your supply runs low. If a match continues over many rounds, saving Vesper to buy high-tier gear later is a smart move.
7. Break boxes and barrels for useful supplies
Near loot chests, you’ll find boxes and barrels that you can smash with one attack. They give small but valuable items like extra wall reinforcements, ammo, and some Vesper. Collecting these helps you prepare for raids, giving you supplies to reinforce your base or attack stronger. Plus, you might save some Vesper by getting these items rather than buying them from the trader.
8. Look for treasure rooms behind reinforced walls
Some maps hide treasure rooms sealed with reinforced walls. Use your Raid Weapon or Warden powers to break down those walls. Inside, you’ll find better guns, armor, and powerful items like amulets that boost your chances of winning.
9. Use your Ultimate chargers
Throughout raids, you can find items called Ultimate Chargers. They’re among the best gear if you find several. Using them increases your Ultimate Power bar — just press your Ultimate button to consume a charger and boost your max. Multiple chargers stack, so you can go from almost zero to full instantly if you have enough.
10. Purge enemy souls for shields
Whenever you defeat an enemy, they leave behind a red soul orb. Use your axe to purge it, preventing the enemy from reviving their teammate. Purging also repairs some armor. If you’re playing as Mara, her passive ability makes purging even more useful by regenerating some armor. It’s a good way to weaken enemies and stay protected.
11. Revive your teammates
Teamwork matters in Highguard. Reviving fallen allies is crucial, especially during raids. It beats respawning far away and saves their lives for future fights. Revives are quick — if you have a revive amulet, even faster. Drag your teammate into cover while bringing them back so they can fight again sooner.
12. Shoot Atticus’ spears and Una’s Wisps
Atticus fans tend to ignore his shockspears, but they’re actually easy to take out. Shoot the orange spears when you see them to stop the shocks. Una’s Wisps lob concussion grenades — they’re obvious and dangerous, so shoot those too. Addressing these threats reduces chaos and keeps you operational.
Following these tips can make your initial rounds more successful. Remember, practice and teamwork are key. Good luck out there!
