Following the announcement of Project Helix yesterday, well-known hardware insider Moore’s Law Is Dead reaffirmed his belief that the PlayStation 6 (PS6) is still likely to debut in late 2027.
Recently, there’s been quite a bit of speculation suggesting Sony might delay the release of the upcoming console, possibly into 2028 or even later. Some of our audience members think Sony should hold off until around 2030, feeling the PS5 still has untapped potential.
Cost increases for RAM and storage have often been cited as reasons for a possible delay, but MLID — who claims to have reviewed various manufacturing documents — argues that canceling contracts with manufacturers like TSMC would be more expensive for Sony.
In his latest video, he mentions that he’s observed evidence pointing to the PS6 being prepared for manufacturing in the second quarter of 2027. He suggests that a delay into early 2028 could happen to allow Sony to build stock and fulfill existing agreements, but he doesn’t believe the launch will be pushed much further than that.
Compared to Project Helix, MLID predicts the PS6 will be significantly more affordable than Microsoft’s new console but only slightly less powerful. He estimates it will support 4K gaming at 120fps and, with improvements in PSSR 3 and ray tracing, should meet most gaming demands comfortably.
While the new Xbox is expected to offer enhanced visuals and graphics, its rumored price tag might be between $1,000 and $1,200. Microsoft has also confirmed plans to support third-party storefronts, which could prevent the system from being sold at a loss—impacting its pricing strategy.
All of this remains speculation, and only Sony truly knows the behind-the-scenes details. Early reactions to the possibility of a PS6 delay were mostly positive, but there’s genuine excitement about Project Helix arriving sooner rather than later. It’s an unusual situation, and it’ll be interesting to see how everything unfolds once more concrete information about both consoles becomes available.
