As you might expect from a Metroidvania, Shadow Labyrinth has many areas, each featuring puzzle rooms and a final boss fight. Defeating these bosses gives you new abilities, making further battles easier.
Wilem Ong is one of these bosses, and this fight is among the toughest in the game. You’ll need some specific strategies to win here.
Where To Find Wilem Ong
There are three types of boss zones in Shadow Labyrinth: main bosses, mini bosses, and rooms filled with enemies. Wilem Ong is a main boss. When you defeat a main boss, you unlock a new ability after a short animation where Puck consumes them.
To reach Wilem Ong, you must go all the way through the Torn Lands area. You arrive after crossing the Sky-High Tree and start at the top right. Make your way to the bottom right and defeat Duke Sirius on your way to get to Wilem Ong.
How To Defeat Wilem Ong
Wilem Ong is relatively easy since he has three main attacks: parry, sword slash, and projectiles. He enters a parry stance with his sword behind him. If you attack him from the front, he will parry your blows and leave you open to a counterattack. This attack cannot be dodged.
To avoid damage, get close to him and dash past so you can attack from behind without triggering the parry. As the fight progresses, he will begin using sword slashes more frequently instead of parrying.
When the boss’s health is low, his sword slashes will create a shockwave that sweeps across the area.
After the halfway point, he starts summoning projectiles that hit where you are when he releases them. The harder part of fighting Wilem Ong is his constant smaller enemy summons. They come in this order:
- 1: Tribal Charger
- 2: Tribal Assassin and Tribal Lancer
- 3: Tribal Scourge and Tribal Axman
- 4: Tribal Assassin and Tribal Lancer, twice quickly
- 5: Six Tribal Chargers, followed by one each of Tribal Charger, Scourge, and Archer.
By the fifth summon, you should be able to stun Wilem Ong and stop further summons.
The key to winning this fight is using your Gaia mode at the right moment. If you lose, you will spawn with half of your Gaia energy filled. Every time you defeat a summoned enemy, devour them using Gaia to build up your energy for the fifth wave.
Once you enter Gaia mode, you can attack Wilem Ong while easily taking out the summoned enemies. By the fifth wave, you should be ready to finish the fight.
Wilem Ong Fight Rewards
As mentioned, defeating a main boss in Shadow Labyrinth grants you a special ability. This fight gives you the powerful ability to parry, which is useful against many enemies.
When you see an enemy preparing an attack with a red glow, you can time your parry to block it, which will be helpful in future boss fights. With certain perks, a well-timed parry can also send projectiles back at the enemy.
