Today’s Connections Category Hints
JANUARY 25 #594
I found today’s puzzle somewhat tricky, but I managed to get it right in the end. Some words are deceptive due to their groupings. The last two categories, in particular, are quite challenging to distinguish. While there are some interesting words included, one helpful hint is that none of the categories depend on the meanings of the words. This means you won’t be searching for synonyms, making it a bit more difficult to sort each category.
- One category involves four different elements typical in a specific public establishment.
- One category features four items you would find at a certain vacation spot.
- One category contains four words that share a similar origin.
- One category consists of four words that can all be modified by adding a specific set of letters.
If you’re uncertain about how to categorize the words, you can refer to the category names to assist with this. Below are full spoilers if you need help with a particular category.

SCHOOL PERIODS |
|||
---|---|---|---|
CLASS |
HOMEROOM |
LUNCH |
RECESS |
This category was the first one I identified and it appeared quite straightforward unless you’re not very familiar with the others. Almost everybody has been to school at some point, and even those who are homeschooled would recognize LUNCH and CLASS enough to seek out related educational terms. While RECESS can have court-related meanings, its educational context is clear, and HOMEROOM seems fitting among the other terms as well. Moreover, there are no other “school” words that stand out.

FEATURES OF A SKI RESORT |

---|---|---|---|
LIFT |
LODGE |
MOGUL |
SLOPE |
This was also the second category I identified, and I found it to be fairly recognizable. LIFT and LODGE are words that can relate to various contexts, but they quickly bring skiing to mind. SLOPE is also commonly understood enough to be easily identified. However, MOGUL may not be well-known unless you have some ski experience; I learned it mainly from watching the Olympics, and I ended up adding that word last.

WORDS DERIVED FROM JAPANESE |
|||
---|---|---|---|
EMOJI |
GINKGO |
KARAOKE |
TYCOON |
This is where things got a bit more challenging for me, and I ended up solving this one last. I said the last eight words out loud, scrutinized the beginning and ending letters of each one, and even researched the meaning of GINKGO to see if it could assist. I had a nostalgia-driven hope that TYCOON would relate somehow to the Roller Coaster Tycoon game franchise since I played the original version growing up. Nonetheless, I was glad to simply select these words at the very end; I astonished myself with how I tackled the next category.

WORDS AFTER THE PREFIX “TRI-“ |
|||
---|---|---|---|
ANGLE |
CYCLE |
DENT |
POD |
Interestingly, I can’t pinpoint how I arrived at this solution, as I didn’t have a solid reasoning for selecting these four from the rest. I was staring at the last eight, running through the previous steps, when, out of nowhere, my intuition led me to believe that ANGLE, CYCLE, DENT, and POD were a coherent grouping. This instinct surprised me more than anyone, and I can only credit my daily practice with Connections for the past several months.
