As you climb the ranks at the Arcane University, you do so under the careful guidance of the Archmage. Having witnessed the threats posed by necromancers and their dark rituals firsthand, the Archmage has enlisted your help to uncover schemes that may involve both forgotten faces and new adversaries.

With your growing reputation and skill within the guild, your upcoming mission will demand more from you than any prior task. You will face your most perilous challenge yet. Time is of the essence, and your expertise will not only affect the fate of someone vital to the Arcane University but could also impact the entire guild and the realm of Tamriel.

How to Start the Liberation or Apprehension Quest

To embark on this quest, you need to have completed all four assignments from Raminus Polus and achieved the rank of Magician. The tasks include:

The Mages’ Staff
Ulterior Motives
Vahtacen’s Secret
Necromancer’s Moon

Once these prerequisites are fulfilled, you can accept the quest from Archmage Traven.

He will instruct you to rescue Mucianus Allias from the ruins of Nenyond Twyll, where he is held captive by battlemages of the university.

Sometimes, the entrance to the Archmage Council chambers is flagged as trespassing. However, you can safely proceed without any consequences. Just use the teleporter without worry.

How to Rescue Mucianus Allias

Nenyond Twyll is a series of Ayleid ruins located south of the Imperial City, around 500 steps west of Hircine’s Shrine and 200 steps west of Faregyl Inn.

You’ll find the entrance through a door at the base of a marble structure with a spiral staircase leading underground.

Upon entering, a battlemage named Fithragaer will question your presence and claim to be the last remaining battlemage. When he asks you to follow, he’ll dash ahead without warning.

Chase him quickly as he will trigger a floor trap that leads to his demise. You must navigate the edges of the platform to avoid this fate.

At the end of this section, you’ll encounter a skeleton and a necromancer. Defeat both to continue deeper into the ruins.

Fithragaer usually dies in the trap, but he might evade it if you’re not quick. You can try to keep him alive, but be warned: he is likely to fall to a single hit from any enemy. It’s often not worth the effort to save him, as it may cause unexpected issues.

In the next room, you’ll find two necromancers. It’s advisable to take them on one at a time to avoid being overwhelmed by their abilities.

After dealing with both, loot their bodies before moving to the next hallway to confront a skeletal guardian.

Check the nearby hallway for multiple chests containing useful potions; make sure to loot them all.

Continuing down to the Riellesel level, you’ll soon spot an elven woman blocking the doorway ahead. Speak with Mariette Rielle to uncover Mucianus’s fate.

Be ready to fight Mariette as soon as you finish your conversation.

Defeating her swiftly is crucial to prevent becoming overwhelmed by her summoned creatures and the skeleton lurking below the stairs.

In the next room, you’ll face several foes:

One skeleton
One zombie
Three necromancers

After eliminating these threats, you should be positioned on the north side of the bridge. Approach the north wall and open the door by pushing a block on the wall to your left.
Be cautious, as this action will reveal a zombie on the other side.

This isn’t just any zombie; it’s Mucianus Allias himself. Unfortunately, you cannot save him, so put him out of his misery.

Now, exit the ruins and return to the Arcane University to report on his tragic demise.

Don’t forget to loot the chest in the back room before you leave.

When you reunite with the Archmage, inform him of what transpired in the ruins. Completing this quest will conclude this mission, with no rewards other than what you collected during your adventure.

However, finishing this quest will enable you to speak with Raminus Polus to advance to the Warlock rank.
