Venturing across Arrakis on foot isn’t the best idea in Dune: Awakening. You risk sunstroke quickly, not to mention you’ll deplete your water supplies much faster. Plus, being in the open desert puts you at risk of becoming sandworm prey. However, sometimes walking is your only option.
The good news is the MMO offers various tools and gear that can simplify travel. For instance, the Softstep Boots can relieve some pressure when traversing sandy terrains. Since these boots are unique, their schematics can be tricky to obtain, but this guide will help you find them.
How to Unlock the Softstep Boot Schematic
To unlock the Softstep Boots, your first step is to locate their schematic. Fortunately, this item is available early and midway through the game, making it relatively easy to find.
You can discover the schematic at Imperial Testing Station No. 197, situated in the Western Vermillius Gap. Look for it in the southern area, just west of a rocky cluster featuring a large hammer.
While you’re searching, consider launching a probe to pinpoint the exact location of the station. Be cautious, as it’s surrounded by open desert, which may pose challenges in reaching it.
Tip: Using a vehicle like a sandbike can help you reach the station quickly.
Once you find and enter the testing station, you’ll need to venture underground and fight your way through. The Imperial Testing Station isn’t overly tough, but having the right gear is advisable for navigating the dungeon.
After battling enemies and reaching the bottom of the station, you’ll locate the schematic for the Softstep Boots inside a large chest. Be sure to loot the chest, as it contains additional resources you’ll need to craft the boots.
Note: There’s no guaranteed drop rate for the schematic. If it doesn’t appear on your first visit, wait a bit and return. Your chances of finding the schematic improve with each visit to the testing station.
Assuming you’ve secured the schematic, head back to your base for research. Researching the boots will grant you an Imperial Permit that allows you to craft them again later.
However, once you craft them the second time, your ability to replicate them will pause until you regain the schematic and research it again. Since the schematic only spawns in one place, you can farm it by repeatedly visiting the testing station.
How to Craft the Softstep Boots
Before crafting the Softstep Boots, gather the required resources. While most materials are relatively easy to find, a few are rarer and may take more effort to locate.
To obtain Iron Ingots, search for Iron Ore scattered throughout the Vermillius Gap and harvest it using a Cutteray Mk1 or a better tool. Then, use an Ore Refinery to turn the ore into ingots.
You can mostly find Plasteel Microflora Fiber from shipwrecks on Arrakis; search inside wreck chests for this material. Plant Fibers are plentiful; you can find them on the ground next to rock clusters. For Spice-Infused Iron Dust, check any testing stations in the Vermillius Gap.
Warning: When wearing the Softstep Boots in the open desert, stay vigilant. While they make you quieter, you’re not entirely silent, meaning sandworms can still detect you. However, they do offer a bit more safety for wandering in risky areas.
Once you have all the necessary resources, you can craft the boots in either a standard Fabricator or a Garment Fabricator. Regardless of the fabricator you choose, you’ll need the same quantity of ingredients to proceed.
