When you reach the Horns of the South Keep in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, you’ll encounter several Keepers, including Fearghas, the leader, the blacksmith, the healer, and others. Among them, Gwylan stands out due to his intense dislike for seagulls.

Coming from a fishing family, Gwylan has developed a strong aversion to seagulls, a sentiment magnified by his placement at a coastal keep where these birds gather. If you can overlook his rants, he has a task related to his seagull problem.

How to Create the Seaguller’s Mask

(Ir)rational Hatred is a side quest assigned by Keeper Gwylan at the Horns of the Shadow Keep, marking the beginning of a series of side missions.

You can also find Eogan the gardener along the same bridge and start another quest called Pumpkin Peril.

To locate Gwylan, head to the back of the keep, climb the stairs near the tower, and proceed across the bridge that leads to another tower. When you speak with him, he’ll express his frustrations with the seagulls and ask you to find a way to scare them off.

Next, return to the entrance of the keep, ascend the stairs to the main building, and enter the Captain’s Quarters. Inside, you’ll find the museum and need to talk to Rhydderic in the back room, who will share information about the Seaguller’s Mask.

If you haven’t yet learned how to craft Leather, you can purchase the crafting recipe from Margh at the Hunter’s Camp for 300 Gold.

At Osbryht’s blacksmith area, use the Grindstone behind him to unlock the recipe for the Seaguller’s Mask, which requires two Leathers and two Feathers.

  • Leather can be crafted from almost any animal pelt, like Deer or Wolf, found in the Horns of the South, especially near the beach camp, north forest, and the path to the Shrine of a Forgotten God. It can also be bought from Osbryht’s shop for 30 Gold each.
  • Feathers drop from human enemies using bows, found in places like the Flooded Mines on the southern shore of the Horns of the South, at The Gallows, or within the Abandoned Village.

Once you gather the materials, return to Gwylan on the bridge. He’ll wear the Seagull’s Mask, rewarding you with experience points and a consumable Giant Feather, which boosts your max Encumbrance by five. You can also talk to him again to begin the next quest in the series, Eternal War.

How to Craft and Place the Seagull Traps

For the Eternal War side quest, Gwylan asks you to make and set up traps for the seagulls since they continue to annoy him.

Return to the Grindstone near Osbryht’s shop where you’ll unlock the recipe for Bird Traps. You need to craft four traps; each requires one Fish Fillet, two Wood, and one Bone.

Material Amount Needed How to Find
Fish Fillet 1 Looted from crates, sacks, and barrels near the sea.
Wood 2 Gathered from crates, barrels, or chopping at wood spots like the one near the large tree in the keep. Can also be bought.
Bone 1 Dropped by any skeletal enemies, found scattered in the Forgotten Cemetery north of the Horns of the South Keep.

Locations for Setting the Seagull Traps

There are four specific locations to place the traps throughout the keep. As you approach the right spots, you’ll receive a prompt to Set A Trap.

  1. The first trap goes under the stairs of a scaffold on the far west side of the keep. Take the staircase up to the bridge by Gwylan, cross over to the other side, and place the trap beneath the staircase.
  2. The second trap is located against a broken wall south of the lighthouse. After reaching the first trap, head up the stairs and across the wooden bridge to the cliff’s broken section below the lighthouse, where the trap can be placed.
  3. The third trap is on a small wall section of a tower above the entrance. Access it by ascending the staircase near the blacksmith, going up the scaffolding, and climbing to the top of the stone stairs where you’ll find the placement area.
  4. The final trap should be positioned at a window edge in the northernmost tower. Head to the bridge with Gwylan, then follow the path around to the tower with a large drop outside.

While you’re in the towers, you can collect several food items and crafting materials from the crates and barrels without it being considered stealing.

Final Steps

Once all traps are set, go back to Gwylan for a third talk. You’ll receive experience and 200 Gold, advancing to the next part of Eternal War.

Return to the central floor and chat with Fearghas about Gwylan. This discussion will open up an option to address Gwylan’s worsening condition, requiring a Perception check:

  • If you fail, you’ll complete that portion of Eternal War, earning 100 EXP, while Gwylan remains on the wall.
  • If you succeed, you get a slightly altered response and an extra 50 EXP, and Gwylan will move to the Barracks.

This journey through the Horns of the South Keep offers an engaging mix of character interactions and quests, leading to memorable gaming moments.
