If you enjoy sci-fi infused with a playful spirit and a hefty dose of humor, then Revenge of the Savage Planet will be right up your alley. The game is light-hearted and doesn’t take itself too seriously, constantly giving you new upgrades and tools to experiment with. The storyline is easy to follow, so you can engage with it at your own pace without losing track of what’s happening.
The real highlight is the diverse planets and the unique creatures that inhabit them. There’s a wide range of beings to discover, each presenting its own battle challenge. If you’ve ever wished to observe them up close, you’re in luck—you can capture these creatures for a more personal view. And rest assured, it’s all done in good fun.
How to Capture Creatures
To begin capturing creatures, you’ll first need to locate your lasso whip. This handy tool replaces your default melee attacks, allowing you to whip enemies from a distance and access grapple points. It’s quite versatile, enabling you to capture creatures on the spot. While the process is straightforward, there are a few steps involved.
Start by holding down the whip button until you see it start to spin like a lasso. Aim at an enemy, and once the reticle locks on and the camera begins to follow them, it’s time to throw. This targeting slightly varies between smaller monsters and those with weak points, so here’s how to capture each type.
The game tutorial suggests that you must aim before holding the melee button to get the lasso ready, but that’s not actually necessary.
Regular Creatures
For the smaller creatures without weak points, the capture method is simple: toss your lasso and hold the highlighted button to reel them in. Just keep in mind that you’re not invincible during this process, so eliminate any nearby enemies that might interfere.
After lassoing a creature, you’ll need to pull it in, which is quicker if you’re closer. This method is especially useful when there are other threats nearby. Fortunately, smaller creatures won’t break free easily unless terrain interferes, so just keep tugging until you’ve got them.
Creatures with Weak Points
Capturing larger creatures is a bit different since they each have specific weak points. For instance, Crushers have a weak spot on their tails, while Beetles are vulnerable at the unarmored sections of their shells. To successfully capture them, you must first stagger them by targeting their weak point.
This weak point should be hit at least two times to stagger them, and possibly more for tougher foes. Just be cautious not to deal excessive damage, or you may end up defeating them before getting your chance. Once staggered, pulling them in becomes much easier.
A few exceptions might require you to occasionally stop pulling to relieve the pressure, similar to fishing.
Visiting Your Captured Creatures in the Planetary Pens
Once you capture a creature, it disappears into the void, which might leave you wondering where exactly it has gone. On your first capture at Stellaris Prime, you’ll need to call down a creature pen from space to store your captured friends. Until then, they are technically nowhere. A bit unsettling, but they won’t stay lost for long.
After that initial creature pen, all subsequent pens are summoned before you can visit new planets. It wouldn’t be right to keep creatures trapped in the void for too long, after all.
Your first visit to one of these creature pens will result in all your captured creatures being released from the void. Each creature can be interacted with for a special animation. Otherwise, they will roam about their pen, content in their new smaller surroundings. While you can admire your captures, interaction is limited.
Researching Captured Creatures
Besides observation, there’s another aspect of capturing creatures that adds value: researching them. You can do this from the computer in your habitat. Each research session lasts a few real-time minutes, with larger creatures taking longer. Depending on the species, research can take anywhere from one to six minutes.
The reward for your research efforts? New color schemes! Your outfit consists of four interchangeable pieces, each of which can be customized with different colors. Each creature you research unlocks new color options, so be sure to capture as many as possible to explore the universe in style.
Once you unlock a new color scheme, it becomes available for all gear pieces, not just one type.
