In the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG), the rarity symbols indicate how common or rare a card is, affecting how likely it is to show up in booster packs. While earlier sets clearly defined these symbols, the more recent ones have muddied the waters—it’s possible you pulled a highly sought-after card without even knowing it!
Gold Rare cards from the Scarlet & Violet series are among the most coveted cards today. In this guide, we will explore what Gold Rare cards are, how to identify them, and provide a comprehensive list of all Gold Rare cards available up to this point. Get ready to enhance your understanding and possibly your collection!
Gold Rare Cards, Explained
Gold Rare cards, also known as Hyper Rare cards, were introduced in the Scarlet & Violet sets. True to their name, these cards feature a stunning gold-patterned background. They are classified as Full Art and Secret cards, and they come with gilded holographic details and golden borders.
Each card in a series has a unique collection number, typically found in the bottom corner. If a set has a total of 120 cards, those numbered 121 and above are considered Secret cards.
Gold Rare cards go beyond just Pokémon; they also encompass energy cards, special energy cards, item cards, stadium cards, and Pokémon Tool cards. Notably, there are no Gold Rare versions of Support cards.
These stunning holographic cards boast an additional layer of glitter foil, making them even more appealing. You’ll find a rarity symbol next to the collection number, consisting of three gold stars—two located below and one above, forming a pyramid shape.
Finding Hyper Rare cards is quite challenging because they are notoriously rare. If you manage to snag one, make sure to sleeve it immediately to keep it in pristine condition. Due to their high value, it’s also wise to ensure you purchase from reputable sellers to avoid counterfeit Gold Rare cards.
Be careful not to mix up Ultra Rare cards with Hyper Rare cards; while Ultra Rare cards might be full art, they lack the gold finishing and are marked with a ‘UR’ symbol, whereas Hyper Rare cards have a three-star rarity symbol. Typically, Hyper Rare cards are rarer and more valuable than their Ultra Rare counterparts.
In the original Japanese Pokémon TCG, Ultra Rare (UR) cards can be considered virtually equivalent to Hyper Rare cards in the English versions. However, there was not a complete overlap between the two categories.
Earlier English sets often categorized what are now called Hyper Rare cards as Secret Rare cards. In Japanese sets, the UR symbol is used for Ultra Rare cards, while Hyper Rare cards in English sets are classified as more scarce and valuable than Ultra Rares. This distinction highlights differences in rarity assessments between older and more contemporary sets.
