RimWorld is full of surprises and unexpected events. With its random nature, you might find yourself facing disasters when you least expect them. Sometimes it feels like luck is the only way to obtain crucial gear or resources. If you wish to take charge of your gameplay experience, this is where having a bit more control comes in handy.
This is where console commands—or what RimWorld calls its version—come into play. You can find Developer Mode in the options menu, which opens up a range of tools and commands that aren’t usually available. While it can be a bit overwhelming at first, here’s a simple guide to get you started.
How to Enable Developer Mode
Activating Developer Mode is straightforward: open the Options menu while in-game. In the General tab, look for the ‘Development mode’ option, which is marked with a cross by default. Click on it to enable the mode.
Once activated, two things will happen:
- You’ll gain access to Dev settings from the menu by going to the Dev tab. This lets you adjust background features such as error logging and even turn off Developer Mode entirely.
- You’ll see a variety of features at the top of the screen while playing.
Three key features that enhance gameplay with Developer Mode are Debug Actions, Debug Settings, and God Mode.
Debug Actions |
Here, you’ll find many actions similar to console commands. You can manually spawn events, eliminate creatures or characters, change factions, or modify characters in specific ways (like healing or improving skills). Most actions are easy to understand, but it’s wise to save your game beforehand, just in case something unexpected happens. |

Debug Settings |
This menu is packed with options to change the game mechanics and what information you can access. Key features include turning general damages, pawn damages, storyteller events, and diseases on or off. You can also enable ‘cheats’ like quick ecology, faster research, and accelerated learning. You’ll find settings for certain DLCs, like Ideology and Grav Ship adjustments, here too. If you often mod the game, the Show FPS Counter option can help you monitor performance. |
God Mode |
This feature is available in the Debug Settings menu and can also be toggled from the banner at the top of the screen. It’s important to understand that this cheat allows you to build instantly for free and sell items not owned by you; however, it doesn’t protect your characters from harm. To safeguard your characters, you would need to deactivate player damage in the Debug Settings menu. |
Some actions are marked with a ‘T:’ —indicating they are targeted actions. After selecting such an action, you must click on the area or object you want to interact with. If needed, right-clicking will cancel the action.
The palette icon in the top bar brings up the Dev palette, where you can pin commands and settings for quick access by clicking the accompanying pin icons.
How to Re-Enable Development Mode If You Disabled It
If you’ve disabled Development Mode—either intentionally to avoid distraction or accidentally—you can easily turn it back on.
Disabling this mode simply creates an empty file in your RimWorld Config folder. You can find it by navigating to \AppData\LocalLow\Ludeon Studios\RimWorld by Ludeon Studios\Config. Just delete the file named ‘DevModeDisabled’. When you restart the game, Developer Mode will be available again.
This method works for Windows. If you’re using Linux, you can re-enable it by typing the following in the console: cd “~/.config/unity3d/Ludeon Studios/RimWorld by Ludeon Studios/Config”
