Marathon features four different maps, or zones, that players can explore in the full version of the game. Each zone presents unique threats, gameplay experiences, and opportunities to find loot, along with story details that add depth to the setting. All the maps are set on Tau Ceti IV, a science-fiction colony that has been hit by a disaster and taken over by robots from the UESC. Perimeter is considered the most beginner-friendly map. It’s located on the colony’s outskirts, offering more safe spots and stealth opportunities. It shows the area where the colony was expanding when disaster struck, making it a good place for new players to get comfortable.
Dire Marsh is often called Marsh or the Disaster zone. It’s the heart of the catastrophe, with the alien force known as the Anomaly emerging from the ground. The zone is centered around a main complex and emphasizes straightforward, action-packed gameplay. Its enemies and layout favor direct confrontation.
Outpost is a smaller map with a lot of vertical gameplay, built around the Pinwheel structure. It’s a former enemy UESC base that still has security systems and weather hazards. Its enclosed environment makes it harder to hide from enemies—whether players or robots—and offers a more intense, action-heavy experience.
Cryo Archive is the final challenge—set aboard the enemy ship. It’s meant to be unlocked only after progressing through the game. This zone has the best loot, but its enemies and traps are the most difficult. It features a frozen region with seven vaults, each more challenging than the last. Developers have hinted that something dangerous is hidden on the ship, potentially kept under lock and key, adding another layer of mystery.
