In Dead in Antares, you’ll manage a total of ten crew members, but you won’t have access to all of them immediately. At the start, you’ll control a team of three, and over the next few days, you’ll gradually wake the remaining crew members from cryogenic sleep.
You won’t get to choose who wakes up when, so proceed as normal. By around 20 days into the game, all ten crew members should be awake. Once everyone is available, it’s crucial to review each person’s role and determine where they can be most useful.
Where to Assign Each Crew Member
When deciding where to assign a crew member, it seems logical to base your choice on their skills. Skill levels should be your primary concern, and the game allows you to filter crew members by station to see who is best suited for each role.
This list considers their current condition, but only if it impacts their effectively performing the job. For example, if a station needs a physical skill and a crew member is injured, they might not be the top choice. However, you should also do some personal evaluation—don’t rely solely on the game’s recommendations. If a crew member is under significant stress, they might still be the best for a physical role since stress doesn’t directly reduce physical ability. Yet, if external factors like weather add stress, it might be wise to pick someone else.
Some crew members have traits that influence their performance too. For example, William, as a medic, can help reduce stress and fatigue for patients, benefiting everyone. On the other hand, Liu may have negative effects if forced to work alongside others at specific stations.
Factors to Consider When Assigning Crew Members
- Weather conditions
- Traits and current health
- Skill levels
- Station conditions
- Available resources
When a crew member levels up, you might have opportunities to boost specific skills, which can change their optimal station placement. Therefore, keep in mind that your choices can evolve based on their development.
Optimal and Poor Station Assignments for Each Crew Member
It’s important to understand where each crew member excels or struggles to maximize efficiency and avoid wasting slots on unsuitable positions. Here is a quick overview:
| Crew Member | Best Stations | Worst Stations |
|---|---|---|
| Amelia, The Captain | Water Tanks, Generator, Expedition | Polymer, Laboratory, Botany |
| William, The Medic | Water Tanks, Infirmary, Mining, Botany | Forge, Gathering Camp, Fishing Camp |
| Liu, The Engineer | Forge, Workshop, Laboratory, Infirmary | Gathering Camp, Fishing Camp, Mining |
| Polina, The Scientist | Laboratory, Workshop, Infirmary, Botany | Generator, Water Tanks, Gathering Camp |
| Maria, The Scout | Generator, Water Tanks, Mining, Camp | Forge, Workshop, Laboratory |
| Noemi, The Xenobiologist | Laboratory, Botany, Polymer, Tutoring Space | Generator, Water Tanks, Forge |
| So Young, The Sniper | Generator, Mining, Camp, Expedition | Infirmary, Polymer, Pen |
| Gabriel, The Jack of All Trades | Forge, Workshop, Pen | Water Tanks, Mining, Carbon |
| Omar, The Diplomat | Tutoring Space, Expedition, Recreation Area | Generator, Polymer |
| Dwayne, The Mercenary | Forge, Camp, Expedition, Hunting Camp | Workshop, Laboratory, Infirmary |
If a station isn’t listed here, the crew member might be acceptable for that role but should be a backup option rather than your first choice.
Best Crew Members for Combat
For expedition or potential combat situations, some crew members are better suited. While stealth and exploration are key during expeditions, be aware that combat could occur unexpectedly. Many combat-ready characters tend to also have high expedition skills, but you’ll need to consider their combat capabilities for emergencies.
| Best for Damage | Best for Defense | Versatile | Not Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| So Young, Dwayne, Amelia | William, Maria | Gabriel, Liu | Polina, Noemi, Omar |
For combat, try to assemble a team that balances damage output with durability. For example, heavy hitters like So Young should be paired with defenders such as William to ensure survival.
Handling Combat Situations
In a sudden attack, such as an ambush at camp, you don’t need to worry about expedition skills—just focus on immediate combat abilities. Some crew members like Liu, who are less useful in exploration, can be highly effective in fight scenarios. Combining versatile members with strong combat skills can increase your chances of surviving unexpected threats.
