Windrose is an survival game set during the Age of Piracy. When you start, you find yourself on the beach, looking around. Within minutes, you’re collecting random sticks, fighting enemies that seem way too confident, and wondering why everything seems to want you gone so badly. It’s a mix of crafting, exploring, and trying not to die. If you’re not careful, your first hour could be spent just gathering, getting excited over new items, dying, and then repeating the process. This guide is designed to help you move past the early chaos faster so you can enjoy exploring instead of repeatedly respawning on the same beach. Let’s dive in!

Learn Your Build Controls Early

Getting comfortable with camera and building controls is crucial. In build mode, pressing Q allows you to fine-tune the placement of structures, while V provides a higher camera angle, making it easier to line up structures correctly. Practice placing simple structures first to get used to how snapping and camera angles work. Avoid jumping straight into building your entire base; instead, start small to sharpen your skills.

One of Windrose’s most helpful features is the ability to build almost anywhere. This gives you the flexibility to set up bases near important resources or exploration spots like caves. Instead of locking into one fixed location too early, use this ability to adapt as you discover new areas.

Gather Logs and Stones First

Early survival depends heavily on gathering basic materials. Logs and stones are your first steps because they are needed for crafting essential tools like an axe and a pickaxe. Collect these from your surroundings as soon as you spawn so you can unlock more resource options. It’s smart to gather more than you think you’ll need since early crafting can grow quickly once you learn new recipes.

Craft a Bigger Bag as Soon as Possible

Your inventory space fills up fast. Crafting a Torn Sailcloth Bag should be a top priority. To make it, you need two Coarse Fabric and one Rope, both of which come from Plant Fiber. Gathering these materials early – without fighting – makes exploring and resource gathering easier. Extra inventory space means less time running back to storage and more time on adventures.

Stay Alive with Smart Healing and Careful Combat

Surviving in Windrose isn’t easy, especially at first. Healing is vital, and bandages are your best bet early on. They are cheap to craft, requiring only a Coarse Fabric at a workbench. Enemies are tough initially, so you’ll likely take damage often. Keep a steady supply of bandages handy to prolong your chances of survival during fights. Remember to heal before your health gets too low rather than waiting until you’re critically hurt.

Explore for Chests and Loot

Exploration is one of the best ways to gain strength early. Search areas like shipwrecks along the shore for chests. They often contain weapons, crafting materials, and other useful resources. Finding these will give you a significant boost early in the game, reducing your reliance solely on crafting.

Use Lock-On to Control Fights

For combat, pressing T locks onto enemies, making targeting easier. You can also activate auto-lock in the game settings if you prefer a more hands-off approach. Locking onto enemies simplifies managing fights, especially when facing multiple opponents or faster-moving foes.

Remember, You Cannot Pause

It’s important to note that Windrose doesn’t have a pause function. You need to stay aware of your surroundings even when managing menus or inventories. Always ensure the area is safe before opening menus or crafting in dangerous spots, as even a moment of distraction can be costly.

Use Coconuts for Early Food

Food is easy to come by once you know where to look. Coconuts, which you can harvest from palm trees, are a reliable early-game food source. They’re simple to collect and help keep you sustained during long explorations without needing complicated cooking systems right away. Pick up coconuts whenever passing palm trees, even if you don’t need them immediately—they stack well and serve as backup food.

Mark Your Map for Better Navigation

Organizing your exploration is crucial. Use the in-game map to keep track of important locations. You can right-click to create custom markers and set them to display on your mini-map continuously. This system is especially useful for marking your home base and navigating large, unfamiliar areas.
