Digital Phablet – The finale of Stranger Things Season 5 recently sparked discussions on social media over a particular scene where Will Byers (portrayed by Noah Schnapp) comes out as gay to his loved ones while the world faces imminent danger.
Throughout the show’s run, Will’s sexual orientation has been a topic of conversation among fans, and in the final episode, the character openly tells his family and friends that he “doesn’t like girls.” Schnapp shared with Variety, “I was initially concerned that I might need to prepare for this, but honestly, it was flawless. I had no suggestions for changes.” The 21-year-old actor also mentioned that he was “just in tears” and found the scene to be “perfect.”
Controversy Over the Final Scene in Stranger Things Season 5
He further explained, “I was so emotionally absorbed and overwhelmed that I blocked out everyone around me. I had to do that because it was so nerve-wracking knowing the entire cast was watching.” Schnapp added, “Winona was right next to me, along with the boys and Maya [Hawke]. It all felt like a blur. I don’t remember everyone’s reactions precisely, but watching it later, it felt authentic.”
The scene took multiple 12-hour shooting days and a few reshoots to finalize. However, the episode, titled “Chapter Seven: The Bridge,” which features this moment, currently ranks as one of the lower-rated episodes on IMDb, earning a 6/10 rating based on over 40,000 reviews.
Many viewers expressed disappointment, criticizing its pacing and storytelling. Some reviews on IMDb labeled it as a “disappointment,” citing bloated pacing, while others on X (formerly Twitter) declared, “Season 5 of Stranger Things is so bad—one of the worst ever.”
Social Media Reactions and Criticism
Schnapp revealed, “I was so emotional during the shoot of Will’s big reveal in Volume 2 of Season 5: ‘It was like a 12-hour day of just that monologue.’ I was so caught up in what I was feeling that I tuned out everyone around me. I had to because it was so intense to have the cast watching.”
He also shared, “Winona was beside me, and the boys along with Maya [Hawke] surrounded me. It was all a blur. Watching it back, I think it was genuine, and it felt real.”
The scene, however, burdened with extensive filming and multiple takes, has drawn criticism from viewers, with many considering it a letdown. As of now, “Chapter Seven: The Bridge” holds a notably low rating on IMDb with mixed reviews—some calling it a disappointment due to pacing issues and uneven storyline. On social platforms, users continue to voice their dissatisfaction, with comments like, “Season 5 just doesn’t compare to earlier seasons,” and “This season has been a real disappointment overall.”
