The name of Syrian actress Mona Wassef has recently been making headlines online following a home invasion that stirred significant controversy, especially with reports indicating that a family member may have been involved.
Syrian authorities have detained Khawla al-Barghouth, a Syrian-American citizen, on charges linked to theft from her mother-in-law’s residence, Mona Wassef. Officials from Criminal Security confirmed that Wassef has filed a legal complaint against her daughter-in-law after the incident was reported. An informed source clarified that the arrest is strictly a criminal matter and is not politically motivated, nor does it relate to al-Barghouth’s activity on social media platforms. The source emphasized that this case is not considered a political arrest.

Mona Wassef’s son addresses his wife’s detention:
Ammar Abdel Hamid, Mona Wassef’s son, expressed his family’s complete support for his wife, Khawla al-Barghouth, amid the widespread social media conversations about her arrest. He assured that the entire family, “from the oldest to the youngest,” has backed Khawla from the start and revealed they are unaware of who might have falsely accused her or leaked details about her case to the media and social platforms.
He further explained that the U.S. State Department has been closely monitoring the situation and has been in contact with authorities in Syria since day one. The family had chosen to stay silent initially to prevent political repercussions or further division, especially considering how Khawla’s name has been circulated in what he describes as an offensive manner.
Abdel Hamid also noted that while they don’t believe there are direct political motives involved, they see certain procedural issues concerning the rights of Syrian citizens that deserve attention. He criticized the detention as seemingly unjustified, adding that the ongoing detention has fueled controversy and been a catalyst for rumors and conjecture.
