A 25-year-old Japanese woman has recently gone viral after “marrying” Kazuma Kiryu, the main character from the popular Sega video game series, Yakuza. Photos from the event flooded social media on December 9, provoking a wide range of reactions from fans of the beloved franchise.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “A woman in Japan has officially married Kazuma Kiryu,” and added, “How are we as men supposed to compete with the Dragon of Dojima?”
RT echoed the sentiment, stating, “It’s Japan again — a woman, 25, just married a cardboard cutout of a video game character. Sega contest winner was allowed to ‘marry’ Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza. Meanwhile, Japan’s birthrate continues to decline.”
Japanese Woman ‘Marriers’ Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza Video Game
According to Dexerto, the woman did not legally marry a cardboard figure of Kiryu. The ceremony was part of a Like a Dragon event that allowed fans to pay to “marry” their favorite characters from the popular mafia-themed video game.
This celebration coincided with the franchise’s 20th anniversary, and as part of the festivities, fans could participate in a “marriage” to their favorite Yakuza character. Japanese game developer RGG Studio and publisher Sega showcased 11 life-sized replicas of the series’ main characters, inviting fans to “marry” and photograph with them.
The event was quite elaborate, featuring a real wedding hall where the life-sized characters were displayed. To take a wedding photo with their beloved character, attendees had to pay for the premium “Special Wedding Experience Package.”
Automaton reports that participants who purchased this package received private rooms, their own hair and makeup artists, and could invite up to 10 guests to witness the “wedding” ceremony.
