Mumbai: Bollywood actress Tabu, who takes on the role of Sister Francesca in the concluding episodes of the series “Dune: Prophecy,” revealed that she introduced her co-stars to the flavors of Indian cuisine while filming on location.
Regarding her experience in “Dune: Prophecy,” which draws inspiration from “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson and is set 10,000 years prior to the original “Dune,” Tabu noted that it was filled with new experiences, including collaborating with individuals she had never met before.
The series showcases the journey of two Harkonnen sisters as they strive against forces that threaten humanity’s future, all while laying the groundwork for the Bene Gesserit order, as reported by variety.com.
Alison Schapker takes on the role of showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing the series and also serving as executive producer. Anna Foerster has produced and directed several episodes.
Tabu shared, “One day, I received an email from my agents and managers informing me that Alison and Anna, the showrunners and directors, wanted to cast me for this specific role.” With a rich international portfolio that includes Mira Nair’s “The Namesake,” “A Suitable Boy,” and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” she was excited about the opportunity.
After reviewing two scenes from the script, she participated in a Zoom call with the creative team the following day, where they elaborated on her character’s role in the final two episodes.
“I instantly connected with the character and recognized her potential. I realized this was my kind of role, and I was eager to take it on,” Tabu expressed.
Reflecting on the various firsts she encountered during the project filmed in Budapest, she remarked, “I believe it’s the first time in my two-decade career that I’ve worked with individuals I had never met, in a location I hadn’t previously visited.”
Tabu also infused Indian flavors into the production. “I arranged for Indian meals to be brought to the set, serving Josh and the entire team. I had a restaurant in Budapest that would deliver lunch and dinner. We would enjoy our meals outside our trailers,” she explained.
“Whenever I come, I bring a piece of India with me—my home and my work in India are always part of me. It’s an all-encompassing experience,” she added.
Sister Francesca’s character appears in two timelines, with Charithra Chandran from “Bridgerton” portraying the younger version, as mentioned by variety.com.
Tabu noted, “Alison, Anna, and the crew ensured that she met with me, so she could draw inspiration from our interaction.” She emphasized the value of collaboration, especially since Charithra shares a background with Indian roots, making the process smoother and more relatable. “It was lovely to have that meeting, and because she knows my work, the transition felt authentic,” she stated.
When it came to crafting the character, Tabu acknowledged the significance of finding the right balance. “I was aware of the universe that Francesca is part of. I aimed to make her feel integrated into the Bene Gesserit world while highlighting her strong individuality, which is not directly linked to other characters. Balancing these aspects was fascinating,” she shared.
Tabu mentioned enjoying every scene she performed. “I had exquisite dialogues to deliver. My interactions with the Emperor and my character’s son, Constantine, were particularly memorable,” she noted.
“The premise provided a solid foundation for my character, and the romantic dynamic with the Emperor allowed me to explore her depth and agency,” she explained. “Additionally, donning the distinctive costume and veil gave me a unique look, something I’m not accustomed to—it truly stands out,” she concluded.
