Former President Donald Trump announced he will not attend the upcoming Super Bowl in Northern California, citing the distance as his reason. This comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the NFL’s choice of performers for the halftime show and pre-game entertainment, which has sparked backlash in cultural circles.
Trump told the New York Post that he won’t be at the championship game scheduled for February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, describing the location as “just too far.” However, he mentioned he might consider attending if the travel were more convenient. This marks a departure from last year’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, which he attended as the first sitting president to do so.
During his second term in office, Trump has made numerous public appearances at major sporting events like the Daytona 500 last year, the recent college football national championship, and the Ryder Cup in September at Bethpage, New York. Most of these events occurred near Florida or the eastern United States, close to the White House or Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
Trump has also voiced strong opinions about the NFL’s entertainment choices for this year’s Super Bowl. The event’s halftime show will feature Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, and Green Day will perform before the game.
“I’m opposed to them,” Trump stated. “I think it’s a terrible choice. It just spreads hatred. It’s awful.”
In previous interviews, Trump dismissed the selection of Bad Bunny as “absolutely ridiculous” and admitted he wasn’t familiar with the artist. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known professionally as Bad Bunny, has been openly critical of Trump, choosing instead to spend last year’s concert residency in Puerto Rico rather than the mainland U.S.

Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, stated in October that the league would stand by its entertainment choices. Post-owners’ meetings, Goodell explained that Bad Bunny was chosen because of his global fame and noted that criticism of the selection was typical for Super Bowl entertainment. He expressed confidence that the show would be excellent.
Trump clarified that his decision to skip the game wasn’t influenced by the performers, noting that Green Day’s lyrics often contain political content, and band lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong has been outspoken against Trump and supportive of protests related to immigration policies.
A tweet from Pop Base captures Trump’s stance:

‘I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible.’

The Super Bowl remains the most-watched TV event annually in the U.S., with approximately 130 million viewers last year, and another 62.5 million worldwide. The participating teams will be decided after this weekend’s conference championships, where the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks, will face off.
