This week, a significant development occurred in the legal case involving renowned talent manager Ayşe Barım. She has been reissued a warrant for arrest by the Istanbul 27th High Criminal Court, mere days after her initial release due to health issues.
Barım faces charges related to allegedly orchestrating the 2013 protests in Gezi Park. She was previously released on probation with restrictions, including a curfew and travel bans. Her medical records revealed severe heart conditions and a brain aneurysm, which her legal team presented in court, asserting that her life was in danger while incarcerated. The court initially acknowledged these concerns and granted her conditional release.
Shortly afterward, Barım fainted at her residence and required hospitalization. While receiving care, authorities opposed her release, leading the court to revisit her case and issue a new arrest warrant, citing ongoing concerns about her health.
Ali Mahir Başarır, her lawyer, expressed his deep frustration with the court’s decision. “I spoke with her via video conference just three hours ago,” he said. “It’s disgraceful, the disregard some individuals show. You’re re-arresting a person who is clearly unwell. Those responsible for this will have to answer for their actions.”
The decision to arrest her again was based on the same medical reports that originally supported her release. However, the court now claimed there were no obstacles preventing her detention. Critics argue this stance is damaging, while her supporters insist her health remains critically fragile.
Supporters and fellow lawyers have voiced their concerns about her health and well-being. Social media reactions include posts condemning the decision and calling for her immediate release to continue her treatment at home.
Barım is accused of using her influential position in the entertainment industry to persuade singers to participate in the Gezi Park protests. If found guilty, she could face a prison sentence ranging from 22.5 to 30 years.
Throughout her trial, many prominent figures have publicly defended her, emphasizing that she never incited protests; those who participated did so independently.
Currently hospitalized under police supervision, Barım’s legal team is preparing to file an appeal. The case has garnered widespread attention in Turkey, raising critical discussions about health rights, judicial independence, and the treatment of influential figures entangled in politically sensitive cases.
