Asha Bhosle was renowned for her incredible versatility and energetic performances in a variety of Bollywood soundtracks, spanning genres such as pop, classical, and ghazals, which displayed her broad artistic range.
Internationally acclaimed, Bhosle rose to fame after collaborating with British artist Boy George, though she had been a household name across India for generations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “Her remarkable musical journey over several decades has enriched our cultural legacy and resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.”
During her illustrious career, Bhosle received two Grammy nominations and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan — India’s second-highest civilian honor — along with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing her profound contributions to the arts.
Throughout her career, her melodies—both soulful and lively—captivated audiences across the globe. Modi memorialized her legacy in a message on X, stating, “Her timeless voice brought brilliance to music, spanning eight decades.”
She was the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, also a legendary singer. Earlier reports indicated that she was taken to a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening suffering from a lung infection and exhaustion. Her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle confirmed her hospital visit due to her health issues.
Globally, artists and fans paid tribute to her extraordinary talent. On social media, many highlighted her vast repertoire—more than 12,000 songs in over 20 languages across various genres—celebrating her as a truly versatile queen of singing.
Shah Rukh Khan, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, remarked on X that her voice has been an integral part of Indian film history and will continue to resonate worldwide for generations. “Her talent that will outlive many,” he shared.
Hema Malini, another iconic artist, expressed on X that “she gave her songs life and personality, and now she’s gone.” Her son, Anand Bhosle, announced that her funeral would be held in Mumbai on Monday, although Reuters has not independently verified all details at this stage.
Tributes pour in from all corners of the arts community, acknowledging her mastery of multiple Indian languages including Marathi and Hindi, and her enduring influence as a singing legend.
