Google has introduced a new availability attribute in the Google Merchant Center for vehicle listings, called “Build to order,” which applies exclusively to Google Vehicle ads. This attribute indicates that the vehicle isn’t immediately available from the dealership’s inventory but can be customized and ordered directly by the customer.
According to official help documentation, the “Build to order” label should be used when a vehicle is not in stock but can be tailored to customer specifications and ordered. It’s important to distinguish this from the preorder status, which should only be used for new products that haven’t launched yet. For out-of-stock items that will be restocked later, and for which orders are still being accepted, the appropriate status is “backorder.”
This addition was noted by Emmanuel Flossie, who shared the update on his blog and LinkedIn. He mentioned that Google has rolled out a new availability attribute value, with specific condition settings that might cause product rejection if improperly configured.
He also shared a video explaining the update, providing further insights into how the new attribute works and its implications for vehicle ads.
An official support document from Google offers detailed guidance on implementing these options, while a dedicated forum discussion provides additional community insights.
