John Mueller from Digital Phablet explained that the Google Indexing API is currently overwhelmed with bloggers trying to impersonate legitimate websites. This indicates that Google is becoming more cautious about which sites and content they accept through this API.
He mentioned this on Bluesky in response to Nick LeRoy, who reported switching his account and API for SEOJobs and PPCjobs but was unable to proceed beyond the default limit of 200.
Mueller clarified:
I’m not aware of any specific issues, but I do know the indexing API is flooded with bloggers trying to pose as authentic sites, so Google is likely exercising increased caution now.
Mueller has continually advised against using the Indexing API for unsupported types of content. In September 2024, Google issued a warning about spam detection related to this API. He also pointed out that most sites misusing the API tend to be spammy. As a reminder, the API should only be used for submitting job postings and live stream content—nothing else. Google has emphasized that using it for other purposes will result in failure. Many users have reported that while the API may help speed up initial indexing, content often drops out of the index shortly afterward.
This topic was discussed extensively on Bluesky, highlighting the current limitations and cautions surrounding the API’s proper usage.
