The AI Film Studio, established under the upcoming Shanghai International Film Festival in eastern China, was officially launched on May 13. This innovative studio comprises four creative teams, made up of 22 top-tier AI and film industry professionals from various backgrounds, including directors, screenwriters, AI specialists, and digital artists.
In March, the studio invited creators worldwide to participate, resulting in nearly 500 submissions from seven countries and regions. Industry experts carefully selected the team members from these applicants. The selected teams are tasked with producing AI-generated short films that will be showcased at the festival from June 12 to 21. While there is no strict theme, the films are expected to authentically express genuine emotions.
AI technology is significantly transforming how film and TV content are developed, said Tong Ying, deputy director of the Shanghai International Film and TV Events Center. The studio aims to create an authentic production environment that documents the entire process of making an AI film—from initial concept and team collaboration to the final cut. This comprehensive showcase will serve as a valuable reference for the industry and will be presented during the festival.
The focus is on understanding how creativity is generated during AI video production, how various tasks are allocated, and the role of traditional skills like directing, screenwriting, and cinematography within the new creative workflow. Tong emphasized that certain aspects—such as human judgment and experience—remain essential to overcoming challenges in AI-assisted filmmaking.
