Jiaxing Nanhu Airport in Zhejiang Province, East China, officially opened today, marking the country’s second dedicated air cargo hub and the first in the Yangtze River Delta region. This development comes as China intensifies efforts to enhance its transportation network amidst a rapidly growing e-commerce industry.
As the ninth civil airport in Zhejiang, Jiaxing Nanhu primarily serves freight operations but also accommodates passenger flights. The terminal spans 25,900 square meters and features 56 aircraft parking stands. It is equipped to handle up to 1.8 million passengers annually and can process 1.1 million tons of cargo and mail each year.
To support the surging volume of parcels and the demand for faster international shipping, China is expanding its cargo airport infrastructure to bolster air freight capabilities, particularly to support online retail and high-value exports.
The airport’s initial passenger service includes five routes operated by China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Loong Airlines, linking Jiaxing to major cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Changchun. Additionally, YTO Cargo Airlines, a subsidiary of a prominent express courier company, is operating two all-cargo routes to Huizhou and Zhengzhou.
Ahead of the Lunar New Year in February, the airport plans to launch five more passenger routes connecting to Kunming, Harbin, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Haikou.
YTO Cargo Airlines, based at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, will serve as the primary operator for cargo flights at the new airport. Five years ago, the airline partnered with the Jiaxing city government to establish an air logistics hub called YTO Skyhub near the airport, which is set to become fully operational next year.
Strategically situated near Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou, Jiaxing Nanhu Airport is bordered by four expressways and several major waterways capable of handling vessels up to 1,000 tons, facilitating multimodal transportation. A representative from YTO Skyhub stated that the hub offers access to key cities within the Yangtze River Delta in under an hour and reaches European and U.S. markets within 10 hours.
Prior to this, China’s first specialized air cargo hub, Ezhou Huahu International Airport in Hubei Province, opened in 2022. Developed through a joint investment by SF Holding and local authorities, it serves as the main base for SF Airlines, the logistics company’s dedicated carrier.
