[In Photos] Shanghai Sustainability Summit Highlights Global Collaboration

On April 30, top leaders from government, industry, and academia gathered in Shanghai for the 2026 Corporate Sustainable Development Conference to discuss international collaboration and sustainable progress. The event, hosted by the Shanghai Services Federation, centered around the theme “Multilateral Action, Shared Destiny.”

Discussions highlighted pressing issues such as global cooperation, transitioning to clean energy, and innovative infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence. The conference also addressed China’s Belt and Road Initiative—an ambitious effort to develop infrastructure, boost trade, and increase investments across Asia, Europe, and beyond. Other topics included climate change, sustainable finance, biodiversity preservation, public welfare efforts, and transparent information sharing.

Li Qian, party secretary of the Hongkou District Committee, emphasized that green initiatives, low-carbon development, digital transformation, and smart technologies now form the core of industrial upgrades. He noted that sustainable growth has shifted from being optional to an essential strategy for companies aiming to improve quality, boost efficiency, and maintain steady progress.

Song Jiongming, deputy director and president of Shanghai Media Group, pointed out that media’s communication strengths can significantly enhance awareness around sustainable development. It also plays a critical role in guiding and accelerating green initiatives and transformative efforts.

Stephen Jackson, the United Nations resident coordinator for China, noted that Shanghai has become a prominent global center for innovations in environmental, social, and governance issues. The city serves as a vital entry point for China’s broader opening-up strategy and acts as a bridge connecting China with international partners to foster sustainable development cooperation.

Erik Solheim, co-chair of the Europe-Asia Center and former UN Under-Secretary-General, stressed the importance of mutual learning among nations to promote a green evolution centered on people’s needs. He emphasized that technology and nature alone are not enough, and social considerations must be prioritized.

Jean Todt, the special envoy on road safety for the United Nations Secretary-General, highlighted the interconnectedness of today’s world—no challenge exists in isolation. He underscored the necessity of global collective efforts to address traffic accidents, which impact every nation.
