China is an incredibly dynamic market, according to Pontus Erntell, CEO, President, and Chief Sustainability Officer of Ikea China. He emphasized that the country is leading in retail and many other industries.
“China is a strategic market for us on many levels. It’s vital from a retail standpoint, a full supply chain perspective, and in terms of development,” Erntell shared in an exclusive interview following the opening of Ikea’s first small-format store in eastern Beijing on April 30.
This new store spans 1,500 square meters, significantly smaller than the company’s typical larger, warehouse-style outlets. It features about 20 display areas primarily aimed at young couples and families with children.
The launch marks a shift from large-scale expansion to a more targeted market approach, driven by evolving consumer preferences. The smaller store serves to complement the larger locations by adding more local customer engagement points, fostering a community-focused presence to better address diverse needs and enhance accessibility.
Since entering mainland China in 1998, the global home furnishings company has established a comprehensive supply chain in the country, operates an independent online sales platform, and partners with e-commerce giants like JD.com and Alibaba Group.
Having led Ikea China for nearly four years, Erntell described the experience as exciting, noting that Chinese consumers are eager for innovative and fresh experiences.
He pointed out that Chinese shoppers seek products that balance affordability with quality, functionality, and sustainability—values that closely align with Ikea’s offerings.
Erntell also highlighted China’s strength in innovation, calling it a hub for development and creative solutions.
To capitalize on this momentum, the company announced during the 7th China International Import Expo the creation of its first global retail development center for Ingka Group, Ikea’s largest franchisee. This center aims to develop more customer-focused and innovative solutions tailored for China and to be scaled globally.
“Products and solutions are developed specifically for the Chinese market and consumers before being expanded to other regions,” Erntell explained.
He expressed confidence in China’s long-term potential and described ongoing efforts to adjust strategies that will bolster Ikea’s sustained growth and deepening presence in the country.
“We are continually adapting plans to ensure we are here for the long haul, growing and evolving alongside the Chinese market,” he concluded.
