The upcoming Beijing International Auto Show is nearly here. Chinese automakers are set to showcase their latest luxury models, aiming to carve out a larger share of the market from their international counterparts, who are concentrating on growing their electric vehicle offerings.
Electrification, premium positioning, and smart technology are now the main competitive factors in China’s automotive industry. Domestic manufacturers, who have recently gained dominance in the new energy vehicle sector, are pushing aggressively into the high-end market.
The event, themed ‘Leading the Era, Intelligence for the Future,’ runs from April 24 through May 3. Over 1,450 vehicles will be on display across a 380,000-square-meter venue, including 181 new model launches and 71 concept cars.
Attendees will have the chance to view high-end Chinese electric vehicles priced above CNY300,000 (around $44,000), including models such as Li Auto’s L9, Nio’s ES9, Aito’s new M9, BYD’s Tang, Xpeng’s GX, and Leapmotor D19.
Many local manufacturers have already introduced popular models priced between CNY200,000 and CNY300,000. These cars have not only taken market share from traditional luxury brands but have also enhanced their prestige in the high-end segment, transforming the competitive landscape.
Meanwhile, international automakers will also feature their latest electric models at the show, attempting to recover lost ground in China. They have shifted focus towards electrification and local R&D efforts, trying to improve their smart technology offerings.
German luxury brands like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz will introduce new models based on their latest electric platforms. They have created vehicles tailored for Chinese consumers and collaborated with local chip and autonomous driving companies to incorporate intelligent driving systems in a bid to regain their footing in the EV market.
Volkswagen plans to display several locally developed battery electric vehicles. Japanese automakers Nissan and Honda will also present new electric models aimed at Chinese customers, following the release of strategic plans that outline their electrification pathways in China.
Smart technology will be a key highlight at this year’s auto show. As digital functions become critical for differentiation, the event will feature autonomous driving and connected cabin innovations, attracting chip suppliers like Horizon Robotics and Qualcomm, along with providers of smart driving solutions.
Chips designed for automotive use, which are essential for smart features, are increasingly vital in industry competition. Industry leaders such as Huawei, CATL, Bosch, Horizon Robotics, Black Sesame Technologies, and Ecarx will showcase their latest technological advances.
The competition in China’s auto market has shifted from a focus solely on products to a broader contest involving technology, supply chains, and ecosystems.
