During the six-day event, Tesla unveiled its first Asian appearance of the Cybercab, a driverless taxi with no steering wheel or pedals, which is scheduled to go into production in the second quarter of next year. Westwell introduced its Q-Truck, an autonomous electric cabin-less truck already available in 28 countries.

Chinese pharmaceutical company Fosun Pharmaceutical displayed its Marie upright particle therapy system. This technology performs radiotherapy by rotating the patient instead of using a large gantry, which allows for treatment rooms to be condensed from three floors and 120 square meters to a single floor of 30 square meters.

Becton, Dickinson and Company presented multiple intelligent products, including the APM hemodynamic monitoring system, the MMS medication management platform, and an AI-powered hand diagnosis tool. These products leverage data analysis, smart tracking, and algorithms to aid clinical decision-making. The company also revealed its 4F Slim implantable port for MRI procedures, featuring the world’s thinnest catheter tailored to Chinese vascular structures, along with six additional devices.

On the localization front, Tesla demonstrated its energy storage solutions following the startup of its energy storage factory in Shanghai this past February, marking the company’s first manufacturing facility of this kind outside the U.S.

Fosun Pharma highlighted its imported and domestically assembled da Vinci surgical robots at its booth. A company representative explained that starting production in Shanghai in 2023 was aimed at reducing costs and meeting higher customization demands. By May, approximately 480 da Vinci robots had been used to conduct over 600,000 surgeries across China.

Industry experts note that China’s role is evolving from being merely an end market to becoming a substantial development hub, leveraging local engineering talent and manufacturing ecosystems.

Italian machine tool manufacturer PAMA showcased products made within the Lingang Special Area, a strategic testing ground for economic policies within the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The company’s Lingang factory boasts a supply chain localization rate of about 85 percent, with a dedicated R&D team focused on serving the Chinese market. The CFO mentioned that local production enables customization tailored to regional needs that differ from offerings in their German operations.

German water treatment company SYR, participating in its eighth China import expo, displayed an AI-powered dual-tank water system capable of self-learning. The company invested approximately CNY 50 million (USD 7 million) in 2023 to establish China’s first water softener production line with an annual capacity of 80,000 units.
