Chinese companies have been actively exporting their developed and manufactured in vitro diagnostic products to markets across Africa, leveraging their advantages in quality and affordability.
Approximately 50% to 60% of the proposals received for recent medical testing products by the Foundation for Innovative Diagnostic Development came from Chinese firms, according to the organization’s CEO. This non-profit group, launched in partnership with the World Health Organization and the Gates Foundation, is committed to creating, testing, and promoting cost-effective diagnostic tools for infectious and epidemic diseases in low- and middle-income nations.
Chinese-made IVD products are becoming more accessible and reliable due to the higher production capacities and lower manufacturing costs of Chinese manufacturers.
The IVD market in Senegal, previously dominated by European and American brands, is undergoing a shift. As relations between China and Senegal improve, local consumers increasingly favor more affordable Chinese products. Low-income populations, in particular, struggled to afford testing due to its high costs, according to local industry leaders. Since establishing his company in 2015, one entrepreneur has partnered with Wondfo Biotech, a Chinese firm, to introduce more affordable, high-quality IVD products to Senegal.
This company assisted Wondfo Biotech in registering, training, and providing after-sales services for its HIV rapid test kits after they received WHO pre-qualification in 2018. The HIV test kits are now included in Senegal’s official medical guidelines and are widely used as a primary screening tool for AIDS, challenging the longstanding dominance of European and American alternatives.
From the early stages of product design, Chinese firms have prioritized ensuring their products work effectively in developing countries, which has contributed to their popularity among local customers. Contrary to common belief, product quality standards for Africa are often more demanding than those in other regions.
Products must be durable, robust, and cost-efficient. In many cases, testing equipment must withstand over a decade of use without breaking. Understanding regional needs is crucial—such as designing power sources that can operate reliably despite unstable electricity supply, which is common in Africa and Latin America. This attention to local demands is essential for Chinese companies aiming to establish long-term brand loyalty in these markets.
