Recently, a student at the National Electric Power Innovation Academy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was caught engaging in misconduct related to the distribution of a prize from a national academic competition. This incident has sparked considerable discussion within the university community.
The student involved, Fan, participated with teammates in the inaugural “AI + Energy” college student innovation contest and received a second-place award. While the prize money of 5,000 yuan was officially distributed in early February, Fan reportedly told his teammates that the funds had not yet been issued. Under persistent questioning, he concealed the actual amount and fabricated a receipt, allegedly generated by AI, to deceive his peers into believing the prize was only 2,000 yuan.
Following mediation by the university’s student affairs office, Fan promised to reimburse his teammates with an additional 4,500 yuan but failed to follow through on his commitment. The ongoing dispute eventually became publicly known.
In response, the academy and the university promptly prioritized the matter, forming a special investigative team to conduct a thorough review. On the afternoon of May 18, the academy issued an official statement confirming the allegations of misconduct.
According to the announcement, Fan’s actions included forging receipts and secretly withholding part of the competition prize—behaviors deemed dishonest and unethical. As a result, the university has taken serious disciplinary measures against him, including a formal warning, removal from the active party member list, termination of his participation in the “Rong Chang Storage Talent Program,” and cancellation of his internal transfer application approval. Fan has also voluntarily withdrawn from a summer school program associated with the university.
The incident underscores the importance the university places on academic integrity and ethical conduct among its students. Officials emphasized their commitment to maintaining a fair academic environment and promised to continue enforcing strict oversight to prevent similar misconduct in the future.
