Google has officially introduced its Gemini update, which is set to enhance the integration between email communication and scheduling. With this update, Google Workspace users can now effortlessly add events to their Google Calendar straight from Gmail without having to switch apps.
Gmail and Google Calendar have always had a collaborative relationship. Google has previously established features that link the two, such as automatically generating calendar events for flight bookings and restaurant reservations, along with the convenient Set up a time to meet tool within Gmail. With the arrival of Gemini, Google is taking this connectivity to a new level.
As highlighted on Google’s blog, eligible Google Workspace users can enable Gemini to scan their emails for any calendar-related information, providing an Add to calendar button for relevant messages.
The calendar button will be located right below the subject line of the email. When clicked, Gemini will open a sidebar on the right displaying the event details. If you need to make any modifications, simply click on the pencil icon to edit.
Emails that already generate calendar events in Gmail, such as flight confirmations, will not display an Add to calendar button.
Who Can Access the Latest Gemini Feature?
This new Gemini feature is currently available only for paid Google Workspace plans. If you use Google Workspace through your workplace, you likely have access. The following plans qualify for the update:
Plan |
Tiers |
---|---|
Business |
Starter, Standard, Plus |
Enterprise |
Starter, Standard, Plus |
Google One |
AI Premium |
You will also gain access if you or your organization have ever purchased any of the following add-ons:
- Gemini Education add-on
- Gemini Education Premium add-on
- Gemini Business add-on
- Gemini Enterprise add-on
If you belong to one of the eligible Workspace memberships or have the specified add-ons, this feature should start appearing between March 10 and mid-April 2025, as noted by Google.
This new scheduling tool represents the latest effort from Google to create a more cohesive Workspace experience with its Gemini updates. While features like the Gemini-powered video generator are certainly eye-catching, I believe this Calendar shortcut will prove to be the most practical and valued addition yet. Unfortunately, it remains limited to paid Workspace accounts, which saw a price increase this year, but there may be changes in the future.
