If you’re trying to print on thick paper like card stock with your HP printer and it’s not working, don’t worry—there are some simple steps to fix this issue.

First, check what kind of paper your printer supports. Many HP printers that handle card stock or index paper specify a maximum weight, often around 200 gsm (grams per square meter) or 110 lb. If your card stock is heavier than this, the printer might not recognize it or feed it properly. For lighter card stocks, around 147 gsm or 176 gsm, your printer might handle them better if it supports other types of thicker paper, such as brochure or professional paper, which are typically rated at about 180 gsm.

Next, you want to make sure your printer settings match the paper you’re using. If you’re printing from a computer, check the print settings before you hit “Print.” Look for options like “Paper Type” or “Media Type” and see if you can select something like “Brochure” or “Cardstock.” If “Cardstock” isn’t listed, try choosing “Specialty Paper” or “Heavyweight Paper.” Also, be sure to set the correct paper size, whether it’s letter or A4, and then save those settings.

Sometimes, simply opening and closing the paper tray or reloading the paper can help your printer detect the new settings. After adjusting the paper type, it’s a good idea to also check the printer’s embedded web server (EWS) if your printer supports it. You can access this through your web browser by typing in your printer’s IP address. From there, navigate to “Tray and Paper” settings and update the paper type and size directly on the device. Keep in mind, you might need your printer’s PIN for access, which is usually printed on the back or inside the printer.

When you send your print job, make sure the source tray is set properly. If it’s set to “Automatic,” try manually selecting the tray with the correct paper loaded. This helps ensure the printer uses the right settings and can handle the thicker paper without pushing it through quickly without printing.

Finally, match the job settings on your computer to the paper type selected on the printer. For example, in your print setup, choose the same paper type—such as “Brochure” or “Heavyweight Paper”—to help your printer process the thicker media properly.

By following these steps—checking supported paper weights, adjusting printer and job settings, updating settings through the embedded web page, and matching tray source—you should improve your chances of successfully printing on heavy card stock. Remember, always refer to your specific printer’s manual or HP support pages for model-specific instructions and supported paper types.
