Reddit has announced its plans to implement AI-generated summaries for search results, aiming to enhance users’ interactions with its vast library of content.

This initiative was shared during the company’s Q2 earnings call by CEO Steve Huffman, who noted Reddit’s impressive growth, boasting over 342.3 million weekly active users and more than a billion monthly searches.

The AI summaries will provide concise, informative overviews of various topics at the top of search results, enabling users to find relevant information more quickly.

Huffman pointed out that this development is part of Reddit’s broader strategy to improve the search experience for its users. “This is yet another step toward refining searches for everyone,” he remarked.

The company also reported a 57% increase in user engagement over the past year, highlighting the rising demand for effective content navigation.

Reddit’s integration of AI technologies is supported by partnerships with significant players in the tech industry, including Google and OpenAI. A $60 million annual agreement with Google allows the tech giant to utilize Reddit’s content for training its AI models.

OpenAI is likewise granted access to Reddit’s Data API for sourcing real-time content for applications like ChatGPT.

In an additional announcement, Huffman disclosed the termination of free data scraping on Reddit, posing a challenge for companies such as Microsoft, which will now need to pay for data access.

Huffman stressed the importance of managing Reddit’s data and ensuring responsible use. “Without these agreements, we cannot control how our data is used or prevent its misuse,” he stated.

These actions reflect Reddit’s dedication to using AI to enhance user experience while also safeguarding its data assets through strategic partnerships.
