OpenAI has announced an exciting new memory feature for ChatGPT that allows the AI to remember details from your previous conversations, creating a more customized and engaging experience for users.
In the past, memory in ChatGPT had to be activated manually for specific pieces of information. Now, it can seamlessly retain important details such as your preferences, interests, and recurring subjects of discussion.
For instance, if you’ve indicated that you’re a baseball enthusiast or that you prefer concise responses, ChatGPT can incorporate that context into its future interactions without you needing to mention it again.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his enthusiasm about this update, stating, “This is a surprisingly great feature,” and envisioning a future where AI is “incredibly helpful and tailored to individual needs.”
This update marks a significant evolution in user-AI interactions. Instead of starting each conversation from scratch, ChatGPT can now deliver a more coherent and personalized experience over time. Whether you’re using it for writing, brainstorming, education, or personal projects, the AI can adapt to your preferences, remember prior conversations, and even anticipate your needs based on what you’ve discussed before.
Importantly, users maintain complete control over what the AI remembers. You can deactivate the memory feature at any point through the Settings menu and manage your memories with ease via the “Manage memories” section, where you can review, update, or remove specific details.
OpenAI stresses that privacy and transparency are central to this new feature, ensuring that users are fully aware of what information is being remembered and how to control it.
Currently, this memory functionality is available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, with plans for a wider rollout in the future. However, it isn’t yet accessible in certain regions, including the UK, Norway, and Switzerland. OpenAI plans to extend access to Team, Enterprise, and Edu customers in the coming weeks.
With this upgrade, OpenAI is working towards a vision where AI goes beyond mere responses to prompts; it learns from its users, evolves alongside them, and transforms into a supportive partner in everyday life.
